True Faith
Sophie Ellis-Bextor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
A sudden sense of liberty
I don't care 'cause I'm not there
And I don't care if I'm here tomorrow
Again and again I've taken too much
Of the things that cost you too much
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun
When I was a very small boy
Very small boys talked to me
Now that we've grown up together
They're afraid of what they see
That's the price that we all pay
Our valued destiny comes to nothing
I can't tell you where we're going
I guess there's just no way of knowing
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun
I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
A sudden sense of liberty
The chances are we've gone too far
You took my time, and you took my money
Now, I fear you've left me standing
In a world that's so demanding
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun

Overall Meaning

In Sophie Ellis-Bextor's song "True Faith," the lyrics explore themes of self-discovery, nostalgia, and the emotional journey of letting go of fear and embracing freedom. The song begins with the singer expressing a newfound sense of extraordinary and being in motion. There is a feeling of liberation and a disregard for the consequences of their actions. The lyrics suggest that the singer has been indulging in excessive behaviors, perhaps as a coping mechanism to escape from a troubling reality.

The chorus reveals the significance of the morning sun, describing it as a drug that brings the singer closer to their lost childhood. It represents a longing for a simpler time and a feeling of safety and innocence that has been replaced with fear. The juxtaposition between the morning sun and fear emphasizes the singer's longing to reclaim the happiness that was once present in their life.

As the song progresses, the singer reflects on the past and the relationships they had with others. They mention small boys from their childhood who used to talk to them but are now afraid of what they see. This could symbolize the changes and challenges that come with growing up and becoming adults. The lyrics suggest that the price we pay for our aspirations and dreams can often result in disappointment and a sense of emptiness.

The song concludes with a repetition of the chorus, reinforcing the idea that the morning sun is a powerful force in the singer's life. However, the final lines suggest that the journey might have gone too far and the singer feels left behind in a demanding and uncertain world.

One of the problems when people cover other people's songs is if they can match the original mood and vocal texture of the song. Upon hearing this I can honestly say I am impressed as the song most certainly suits Sophie's Voice. Love this version- Top marks to Sophie and her musical team.

joe malone

she doesn't make too many mistakes in fairness .

Phillip Cox

Nobody has a voice even similar to Sophie's unique voice. AUS

Wow...New Order can be so proud that you did cover this gem. Very very well done

Pinolillo Manolillo

Woww!! Una de mis cantantes favoritas cantando un clásico de una de mis bandas favoritas...súper!!!

Very good cover. When you're doing a cover of a New Order or Joy Division song, you don't just need a good voice (which Sophie clearly has). But you also need a great bass player. This is for the simple reason that one has to match the bass skills of Peter Hook. And Sophie seems to be well aware of that fact. Because the bass guitarist in this song is also amazing.

Kirsten Brooks

Amazing cover. Her voice and the strings are sensational.
