Listeners familiar with the Dutch music tradition will instantly recognise her style: Sophie gives a modern take on the so-called 'levenslied' or 'smartlap' of typical Amsterdam 'volkszangers' like André Hazes. There is also Dutch eighties and indie pop in the mix. Many Sophie Straat songs are in fact protest songs (of sorts) against gentrification, mansplaining, et cetera.
Her début EP, ’t Is niet mijn schuld, was released in 2020. Following a string of singles, her début full-length, Smartlap is niet dood, is set for a March 2023 release.

(Mmmh)
Elke dag dezelfde slur
Maakt geld nou echt gelukkig (Maakt geld gelukkig?)
Oh, Jessie
The lyrics to Sophie Straat's song "Jessie" depict the struggles and internal conflict of a person named Jessie who works on the Zuidas, a financial district in Amsterdam. The song starts with Jessie's daily routine, taking public transportation for the first time and feeling like an outsider in the professional world. The mention of the Tesla not starting represents a disruption in Jessie's life, making them late for work, but in the grand scheme of things, nobody really cares. However, a small moment of rebellion reminds Jessie that they are alive.
The chorus serves as a reflection on Jessie's current situation. The question of whether money truly brings happiness is posed, questioning if this is really what Jessie wants in life. Being known as "Jessie from the Zuidas" prompts the introspection of whether Jessie is making any meaningful difference in such a competitive and materialistic environment.
As the song progresses, Jessie becomes tired of the monotonous routine and longs for more. The tram becomes an alternative to the Tesla, symbolizing a desire for simplicity and escape from the high-powered corporate world. The acknowledgement of being seen as a jerk, a sleaze, or a banker, further emphasizes Jessie's disillusionment with their current life.
The repeated question of whether Jessie can handle this life and the suggestion that it is never too late to leave reflects the internal struggle and search for personal fulfillment. Ultimately, the song raises the question of whether the pursuit of wealth on the Zuidas is worth sacrificing one's happiness and sense of purpose.
