Predator
Spook Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No way, no way is what I say.
You won't catch me that way again.

I see you walk across the room and I forget
All of the heartache, and
All my regret

You move with a fluid grace and your face belies lies.
Oh... but if you insist then how can I resist?

I'll take you back. I'll take you back... I'll take you back

Oh you're a natural predator
And this Jane Doe best beware.

I'm on to your tricks - I've seen you stalking.
I know your kind and tell myself to just keep walking...
Oh but if you insist then how can I resist?

I'll take you back...

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of Spook's song "Predator" starts off with a firm refusal to be caught again in a painful situation. The singer seems to be addressing their own fear of being hurt again and is resolute in not allowing it to happen. However, this determination is immediately thrown into question by the attraction they feel towards someone they see across the room. This person is described as moving with a "fluid grace" but their face "belies lies", meaning that they may not be as they appear on the surface. Despite this warning, the potential danger, and the singer's awareness of the person's predatory behavior, they can't resist the pull of their attraction to them.

The chorus is a warning to a nameless woman referred to as "Jane Doe". She should beware the natural predatory instincts of the person the singer has their eye on. The second verse reveals that the singer is not oblivious to the person's advances, or their own vulnerability to them. They've seen the person stalking, and know their tricks, yet they still find themselves unable to resist them. The chorus repeats, punctuated by the admission that the singer will "take [them] back". This suggests that they've been hurt in the past, but are willing to overlook the potential danger and give into their attraction once again.
