The song is about the singer's reputation in town, where people judge him based on his appearance and behavior, assuming he is a drunk, unkempt man who sleeps in a stable. The townspeople are depicted as living hypocritical lives full of morality and virtues, but quick to judge and condemn others. The singer initially wants to belong to this social circle, seeking acceptance by wanting to sleep in clean linen and drink fresh milk. He even considered getting married to fit in. However, he realizes he doesn't need to change his ways to fit in, that his love for whisky, which is frowned upon by the town, is his constant companion and better than any human companionship. The song ends with the singer declaring his love for whisky, stating that being alone is worse than being dependent on a substance and that he won't be alone as long as he has his whisky by his side.
