Autumn Leaves
Stan Getz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Overall Meaning

In the first verse of Stan Getz's song "Autumn Leaves," he describes the scene of autumn leaves falling outside his window. The colors of the leaves are red and gold and the leaves travel past his window. He then recalls the memories he had during the summer with his past love. He can recall the feeling of their summertime kisses and holding hands with his sun-burned partner. However, since they've gone their separate ways, his days have grown longer and he knows that winter is approaching. He misses his partner the most during this season and it's a reminder that his love is no longer by his side.

In the second verse, the lyrics switch from English to French, and the meaning of the song deepens. The lyrics translate to "This is a song that resembles us, you loved me and I loved you. We both lived together, you who loved me, me who loved you. But life separates those who love each other, gently, without making a sound. And the sea erases on the sand the footsteps of the separated lovers." The French verse highlights the concept that not all love stories have happy endings. It's a reminder that life separates people without any specific reason and nature can erase these memories just as easily.
