Something in the Way
Stereophonics Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The tarp has sprung a leak
And the animals are trapped
And have all become my pets
And I'm living off of grass
And the drippings from the ceiling
But it's ok to eat fish
Cause they haven't any feelings
Something in the way ah ahhh
Something in the way yeah ah ahh
Something in the way ah ahh
Something in the way yeah ah ahh
Something in the way mmm
Something in the way yeah ah ahhh
Underneath the bridge
The tarp has sprung a leak
And the animals are trapped
And have all become my pets
And I'm living off of grass
And the drippings from my ceiling
It's ok to eat fish
Cause they haven't any feelings
The lyrics of "Something in the Way" by Stereophonics conjure an image of a desolate and abandoned world. The song seems to revolve around someone living on the fringes of society and surviving in harrowing circumstances, such as underneath a bridge with a tarp that has sprung a leak. The person has had to resort to living off grass and drippings from the ceiling, thus highlighting their dire circumstances. The animals that get trapped underneath the tarp are described as pets, but it is juxtaposed with the hint of the singer’s mental breakdown. The line, “..and all have become my pets” is one of the lines that alludes to the despair and isolation felt by the singer.
The most captivating line in the entire song is perhaps "But it's okay to eat fish 'cause they don't have any feelings." It appears to be a straightforward line, but it also contains an abstract meaning. Some people take this line to mean that the singer is justifying his actions of survival in a harsh world. On another level, it could be interpreted as the person dealing with their own overwhelming emotions by trying to rationalize their behavior as "okay."
Overall, this powerful song can be interpreted in several ways, but the poignant depiction of loneliness, mental illness, and survival remains at its heart, making it a classic in Stereophonics' discography.
