I grew up loving steppenwolf and the doors. My parents influence. When I heard pearl jam at 15 for the first time. I found my own music for the first time. Their music spoke to me and still does. The most interesting thing is my parents also really dig them. My dad was a big fan of my music choices as a kid (except for rap and death metal lol) and to this day one of my mom's most favorite songs is wishlist. To this day they're still my favorite band.

I get why your folks can relate to them because to my ancient 58 yr old ears their sound has more in common with Hard Rock acts like Steppenwolf or BTO or Ian Gillan Band or Rainbow than punk or metal or thrash or punk metal hybrids from after the mid 80s ! 👍

Was lucky to get to see them live in 1992 at Lallapoloza when I was 20. They played an incredible show. EV was born to be on stage. I still listen to them on XM radio daily. Their music stands the test of time.

PJ got me through my most difficult times. GTF, Unthought Known, Dissident, Corduroy, Yellow Ledbetter and their version of "Its Ok." Eddie being the empath he is, feels yhe crowd and writes the set list based on what he Feels from the crowd. No band that Im aware of have tackled so many human rights issues thru their music. Eddie and the guys are some of the best human beings on the planet. TY PJ for being there for me.

Love this video! Pearl Jam somehow endured, evaded and overcome the usual downfalls of the era they were spawned from. The band is a living documentary of how bands can evolve, bloom and mature musically. I, like so many musicians, have gained much from this band! 😉👍

I wouldn't say they endured. Their treatment of abbruzese shows how toxic they (particularly eddie) are and the quality of the albums put out between 94 to 2006 and then the more recent albums show how little effort they're willing to put in to their art they're happy to profit off

I saw Pearl Jam in Maui for the last show of their tour of the Ten album. I think it was 92. It was in the high school gym in Kahului, if I remember correctly. Eddie was climbing all over the place. Toward the end of the show he asked the crowd to show the security guys how great we were by asking us to carry him overhead to the back of the gym and and then back to the stage. He went right over me! I grabbed his calf and helped heave him along! At the end of the show Eddie said, "See you all at the beach!". This documentary is great. I really like the last statement. "Pearl Jam proved you don't have to burn out and you don't have to fade away." This band has indeed been my rock for all these years. Their integrity, creativity, sensitivity, and power is always amazing.

One of the best live shows that I ever saw was PJ at the Concert Hall in Toronto(aka The Masonic Temple) with Scottish band Eleven in the support slot. PJ were just awesome. I had just gotten their first album, Ten, a few weeks before, and was lucky enough to have a friend who knew Jeff Ament from when she lived in Victoria, BC. She had moved to Toronto a few weeks before and got me a ticket and after show pass, so got to hang with the band for a little while. Still ranks as one of my best shows ever. I then used the pass to get into their Vancouver show. Was great to see them at that time when they were still basically a new band.

Great doc, thanks Amplified. For me Pearl Jam have to be one of the greatest all time bands due to the sheer amount of amazing music they've released. Particularly for those first 5 albums (yes Joe Levy, No Code is deffo in my top 5)

Even if their later stuff isn't quite as good, they're still guaranteed to have at least 3 or 4 great songs on there, whereas a lot of other bands could release a good later album but with no 'great' songs on it.

Ten is my favourite complete album but I love Vs maybe a tad more coz I got sick of the singles on 10. That happens I guess. Me and my brother's loved Vitalogy and No Code. Lost them a bit after that. Soundgarden and Alice are my absolute faves but PJ changed my life as a singer. It meant I could slay the vocals wen I performed covers for money, which was something I could do to finance my original music. EV , LAYNE AND SCOTT WEILAND allowed me to not have to sing like I was on helium. I always put STP, Pumpkins and Blind Melon in that grunge group of bands. Hate that title coz to me it was just a resurgence of 70s rock, folk and pop/rock, punk and it was poetic. The hair bands to this day defend themselves but what Brett Michaels never got, were the lyrics were naff. Stupid juvenile tosh. Y'know the alternative music actually informed my growth as a compassionate thoughtful man.

Eddie was the frontman of the band Bad Radio, he also wrote some songs, Eddie wrote Betterman when he was in highschool and sang it in Bad Radio, and then when he joined Pearl Jam it took him a few years to introduce Betterman to the band. 😊💓✌️🤘

They're the ones who wanted to make streaming big while concentrating only on singles while ALSO teaming up with ticket master to monopolize ticket sales so if you DO want to see a band or go to a festival they're your ONLY option in buying tickets. And then they act as their own scalpers and price gouge! That's why they're supposedly "being watched" after the Taylor Swift/Bruce Springsteen bullshit. Charging 5,000 a ticket.. So greedy and corrupt. I'll believe they're being watched and will do differently when I actually see it.

Pearl jam is one of the only Seattle bands to escape the city’s infamous Dark ruling Heroin Demon that claimed so many musicians, although Alice in chains is still around, it isn’t with its most important & significant band member Lane Staley. The greatest of all grunge rock singers in my opinion even more special than Chris Cornell, who does have a better singers voice with more ability, but lane was special and unique more so than any other of that style of music.

My favorite grunge band. Always was. When everyone was going crazy over Nirvana I was like, why??? Pearl jams way better. Lol. Always just loved Eddie Vedder and what he stood for. His voice too was different but freaking incredible. I sang Pearl jams songs for 10 years at every karaoke bar from Massachusetts to Hawaii. His voice was easy for me to duplicate. Had probably 50 guys and women come talk to me after I sang a few songs giving me their card saying call me tomorrow, you got an amazing voice and maybe we can get you a record deal. I'd wake up the next day and look at the card and say, yeah right, I'm not that good. I never called any of them. Now I wonder what would of happened cause I always wanted to be a singer but I never thought I was good enough. I've had thousands of fans screaming and clapping and saying I was awesome but I guess I never really believed they were serious. I'm 51 now and I can still sing, and I still have people saying damn you got a good voice, and I still don't believe their being honest. Wasted talent I feel.

From the get go of 10 I was a fan!! True to consumer form I wanted the next albums to sound just like 10 and was a bit disappointed because, of course, they didn't but I never lost my enthusiasm and respect and eventually came around to liking them all! I've never been to a live show and have had to be satisfied with videos (thank you YouTube uploaders!!!), but who knows... (I build cigar box guitars and have been adapting some tunes to 3 strings, fun stuff... it would be a dream come true to give Eddie a cigar box ukulele!!)
My favorite tunes? Evenflow and The Fixer...
50:38 .. best parody? Tiktok video, "Pizza Rolls" (aka Evenflow)..
54:36 ... Grunge clothing became fashion...and that's the quickest way to kill an "alt" trend.. I remember as a kid in the late '60's and early '70's "psychedelia" was seen as dangerous to mainstream parents but marketing people saw a goldmine in it and the emergence of chain "psychedelic" stores like The INshop in shopping malls made it more palatable and "safe"...
54:33 ... grunge fashion...then why show a photo featuring the design of Christian Francis Roth from the '70's? That's as far from grunge as anything!

Facts: Guns n Roses, "Appetite", exposed and placed the kill shot into the gut of the label-bloated and spent 80s pop-metal genre. It then did a slow death roll and died at the feet of the "Teen Spirit" video/song (in that order), which was the North Star that showed us what was next and where things were headed.

I saw Pearl Jam at The Ventura Theater in California, about 1,500 seating around when 10 was released. I was 32, oldest guy in the room, the kids thought I was a cop. Great show encored with Rockin' In The Free World. I still have the shirt with a Rhino on it.

Really good documentary. Always amazed me the crowds they get in America, The fanbase in the UK is a lot smaller but incredibly loyal. Found it weird that they, along with Depeche Mode, they have never headlined Glastonbury.

As a pearl jam fan for many years I have to say I love no code, and as for the the guy saying there's no other grunge bands from the early days that still exist, I just like to mention the Melvins and of course mudhoney. Still a great documentary though. Pearl jam will always be the band I grew up with and always enjoyed through my life, each album being as significant as and as great as the last. Rock on Pearl jam and all you other fans too.

I love classic rock..even hippie 60’s stuff..and Dio Metallica kinda metal in the 80’s as well as G&R…plus blues…didn’t like glam metal..I wasn’t really wanting to try anything new. I was in college..like 91 or 92…a friend of mine forced me to listen to Alive….I begrudgingly bought the album…next thing I know I’m getting into all the Seattle stuff..I couldn’t get enough of it.

It’s a shame they wouldn’t allow themselves to write great music for the entirety of their career. This was at one point my favorite band of the early ‘90’s. But if I’m honest, their first two albums are beyond head and shoulders better than the rest of their catalogue combined. Must be great to be so big you can put one good song on a record of garbage and not be hurt by it. After Vs. their stuff is barely listenable.

I find it interesting that some people think they are making terrible songs on purpose and that the band agrees they are terrible. They don’t need to make more albums. They could’ve stopped making albums after vitalogy and still be rich for life. Why would they put out more music if they thought it was no good?They keep doing it because they love making music and still enjoy exploring new styles. They have always claimed they push their skills as musicians and continue to make the best music they can on each album. You may not like their newer music but that doesn’t mean the band doesn’t like it or think it’s good.

@Leinoni Bishop the band specifically said they needed to make music that was less commercial. That doesn’t necessarily translate to them thinking it’s garbage. I happen to think that it’s not that good, particularly when compared to their early catalog.

At the end the guy in the leather coat tells you "There are no other bands from the 90's out there today....zero" ummm 🤔 tell that to the still very relevant Alice In Chains and their post Layne work is amazing. Jerry Cantrell is a beast. All everyone talks about is Kurt, Chris Cornell Layne, or Eddie. Jerry is the heart and soul of AIC and still very actively making music that is killing it.

Exactly right!!! I love Pearl Jam but AIC is my favorite band of all time and they are still getting it done today. I recently saw Jerry in Boston on his solo project and he’s still absolutely killing it! AIC with William came around a few months after. I’d love to know what the heck that Seattle biographer was talking about when he said Pearl Jam’s the only ones still around. Pretty weak observation IMO.

Implying that Pearl Jam’s success is due to AIC taking them on tour is pretty silly.

This was a very interesting documentary, however would have been much better with clips from the appropriate era eg. examples of songs from Ten, Vs., Vitalogy, should have been versions with Dave Abbruzzese playing (rather than Matt Cameron who didn’t come along until later).

When I first heard Ten in 91 I thought it was a great attempt at copying 70s hard rock. I never considered PJ a grunge band. TAD, Mudhoney, Nirvana and the Melvins those were the grunge bands. when I was in senior year in highschool in 1992 that's when people really started to take notice of the Seattle bands especially Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. Pearl Jam was a slow burner for some reason but when Vs. hit that was really the album to get into. That 93 to 95 era of the band is my favorite.

I'm not familiar with sound garden, or Alice in chains. I mean I heard a couple songs but at the time I didn't know who it was. When I got interested in pj I got to know Chris Cornells voice and thought he was awesome too. I wondered why he wasn't huge like pj. Or was he? I was in the military when the grunge time started and all they played on base was country music which I only knew of Kenny Rogers. I basically got a 4 year course on country music from Hank Williams to today's sound so I very rarely heard any other music. When I got out, I went back to the radio and that's when I heard pj's ten. I went out and bought it right away. I think I would've bought Sound Gardens cd's and Alice &Chains if they played them more on the radio. Now with the internet and YouTube I can listen to everyone of their songs and I got a new found respect for their music. Idk, love pj but now 30 years later, I love all of those grunge bands.

They weren't originally GOING to call the second album five against one; when it was first released it WAS called "five against one" I had a cassette OR CD (sorry, can't remember which) that was literally titled "Pearl Jam - five against one". Pretty sure it was a CD.

There were 3 versions of packaging for vs. one version had no title at all, one version had ‘five against one’ and the final version had ‘Vs’. They changed the name really late before the release of the record and some cassettes and cds had already been manufactured by then. Instead of trashing the ones with the incorrect titles they just shipped them all.

@William Morris as a fan it would be a fun thing to have but they don’t seem to have much monetary collector’s value from what I’ve seen online. Not rare enough or not a big enough demand for them. Last I looked the cassette with ‘five against one’ was selling for about $30.

A couple things: what about "Hungerstrike"? I know it's a Temple of the Dog song, but it introduced Eddie Vedder's voice in a major way for me. Two, Roger Daltry is the main singer of the Who. Not Pete Townshen So compare him to Eddie Vedder. Did you mean the primary lyricist? Just a very weird Pearl Jam review video for me. Those were to things I've seen that didn't fit work for me. That and the fake Pearl Jam incidental music.

A lot of great music came from that Grunge thing, but let's be honest, that whole Grunge behind the scene was pretty dark. Eddie Vedder is really the only surviving and still doing well front man from that era. Billy Corgan is still alive, but nowadays he looks like a sad and depressed Kingpin. Even Scott Weiland who was accused of ripping off the Grunge style is gone.

There is another front man who was born from the uterus of the Seattle grunge scene. We can't forget Dave Grohl. The Foo Fighters are still a working band and Dave is still an extremely active member in the music community. I don't hear the Foo Fighters referred to as grunge, but that's very odd to me as they were formed in Seattle in the height of grunge by a member of Nirvana. If that's not rooted in the grunge movement, what is?
Though their albums are certainly more polished and pretty than Nirvana, the Foo Fighters unabashedly wail out a punk influenced classic rock sound and Dave screams his heart out with the best of them. I find it very strange that they aren't mentioned in this documentary at all or given credit for their staying power right alongside Pearl Jam.

@Advancedynamix LLC See, I don't even consider Dave as grunge. Dave is a rocker. I've always admired his more uplifting and positive attitude. And he's also really funny! I watched his recent Hot Ones appearance. That guy makes people laugh! He told a story of how he once got electrocuted on stage, hilarious! Go watch it! You will enjoy it!

@Always Employed yeah, that was great. I feel the same way about Dave. However, suggesting that Eddie is the only front man to have continued success from that era is not an accurate point of view. None of these guys ever considered themselves "grunge" to begin with. Eddie writes lullabies compared to Dave's music. I think they are both equally successful in carrying on their influence to modern times having hailed from the flannel lined belly of the grunge scene. Having a sense of humor doesn't exclude Dave from his roots in that darker time in popular music.

@Advancedynamix LLC The music was great. Don't get me wrong on that part. It was just a shame all the drug addiction that was later exposed after Grunge took over the world. I mean, you grow to love the artists because you admire their work, then you hear about their struggles with drugs and mental illness. you know? Like seeing a family member go through that.
