The Trooper
Stryper Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You'll take my life but I'll take yours too
You'll fire your musket but I'll run you through
So when you're waiting for the next attack
You'd better stand, there's no turning back
The bugle sounds and the charge begins
But on this battlefield no one wins
The smell of acrid smoke and horses breath
As I plunge on into certain death

The horse he sweats with fear we break to run
The mighty roar of the Russian guns
And as we race toward the human wall
The screams of pain as my comrades fall
We hurdle bodies that lay on the ground
And the Russians fire another round
We get so near yet so far away
We won't live to fight another day

We get so close near enough to fight
When a Russian gets me in his sights
He pulls the trigger and I feel the blow
A burst of rounds take my horse below
And as I lay there gazing at the sky

My body's numb and my throat is dry
And as I lay forgotten and alone

Overall Meaning

These lyrics are from Stryper's rendition of Iron Maiden's classic song "The Trooper". The theme of the original song is set during the Crimean War of the 1850s and is about a heroic British soldier who charges full speed ahead against the Russian army, even when the odds are against him. Interestingly, Stryper’s arrangement stays loyal to the lyrics and melody of the original while showcasing a slightly heavier sound.

The opening verse depicts the singer speaking about his enemies, who are trying to take his life. In the lines; "You'll take my life but I'll take yours too, You'll fire your musket but I'll run you through," it is clear that he is armed and ready for the combat that is about to ensue. He then provides a warning to his enemies not to retreat, as there is no turning back from the inevitable clash. The sound of the bugle announces the commencement of the battle, but the commotion ceases. The singer plunges into the battlefield where the smell of smoke and horses’ breath fills the atmosphere, symbolizing the barrenness of battle.

The second verse peeks into the battle as the horse sweats with fear before the mighty roar of the Russian guns. As the singer runs toward the human wall, he hears his comrades screaming in agony. In a scene not uncommon in war, he lands near a battlefield covered with human bodies, hurls these obstacles, and sidesteps the Russian soldiers' bullets. However, as he gets closer to the frontlines, he recognizes that his luck is running out as the Russian soldier targets him. In the haunting final lines of the song, his fate is sealed as he falls after being hit, forgotten and alone.
