This was one of the first Sublime songs to be played on the radio after "Date Rape". This cover includes samples taken from the film Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (although this intro is typically removed when the song is played on the radio), a bong being used, and of the artists Eazy E and Just Ice. The lead singer of The Ziggens (a major influence to Sublime), Bert Suzanka, is also sampled saying, "Smoke cigarettes 'til the day she dies!" The track is also featured on the 2003 film "Grind" and a shorter version is available on the Grind motion picture soundtrack.
Smoke Two Joints
Sublime Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
One of them was a male, and the other two
Well, the other two were females
God only knows what they were up to in there
And furthermore Susan I wouldn't be
The least bit surprised to learn that all four of them
Habitually smoked marijuana cigarettes, reefers)
I smoke two joint at night
I smoke two joint in the afternoon
It makes me feel alright
I smoke two joints in time of peace
And two in time of war
I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints
And then I smoke two more
(Smoke cigarettes 'til the day she dies!
Toke a big spliff of some good sensimillia
Smoke cigarettes 'til the day she dies!
Toke a big spliff of some good sensamill
Eazy-E were ya ever caught slippin'? Hell nah!)
Daddy he once told me
"Son, you be hard workin' man"
And momma she once told me
"Son, you do the best you can"
Then one day I met a man
He came to me and said
"Hard work good and hard work fine
But first take care of head"
Whoa rock me to the night
Jah say oh oh oh oh oh
The first verse of the song "Smoke Two Joints" by Sublime describes a woman who is living in a cramped single room with three other people, one of whom is male and the other two are female. The singer suggests that there might be some questionable activities going on in the room, implying that they are smoking marijuana cigarettes or reefers. The singer seems to be amused by this observation and doesn't seem to be judging the people in the room.
The chorus of the song goes "I smoke two joints in the morning, I smoke two joints at night, I smoke two joints in the afternoon, it makes me feel alright". The singer is confessing that he himself is a habitual smoker of marijuana cigarettes. The lyrics can be interpreted as a reference to using marijuana as a way of coping with the ups and downs of life. The references to smoking two joints before smoking two more and smoking two joints in times of peace and war suggests that the singer smokes a lot of marijuana.
The second verse of the song provides some advice that the singer has received from his parents and other wise adults. They tell him to work hard and do his best, but also to take care of his head. The line "Hard work good and hard work fine, but first take care of head" indicates that it's important to take care of mental health as well as physical health. The final line of the song, "Jah say oh oh oh oh oh", is a reference to Rastafarianism, which is a religion that is associated with marijuana use.

This goes without saying, but I'd love to let everyone know that this video was made by born & raised So Cal kids that grew up in Sublime culture. The legacy of this band is something that we take very seriously. When writing it, myself and the Sunflower team wanted to not only create a 1990’s day in the life video, but we also wanted to represent the influence Sublime has had on our generation. Smoke Two Joints is more than a music video. It’s a love letter to the legends of the LBC from the generation that they so greatly inspired. And we are so grateful to finally share it with you all.
