Can't Feel My Face
The Weeknd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And I know she'll be the death of me, at least we'll both be numb
And she'll always get the best of me, the worst is yet to come
But at least we'll both be beautiful and stay forever young
This I know, yeah, this I know

She told me, don't worry about it
She told me, don't worry no more
We both know we can't go without it
She told me you'll never be alone, oh, oh, woo

I can't feel my face when I'm with you
But I love it, but I love it, oh
I can't feel my face when I'm with you
But I love it, but I love it, oh

And I know she'll be the death of me, at least we'll both be numb
And she'll always get the best of me, the worst is yet to come
All the misery was necessary when we're deep in love
This I know (this I know, yeah), girl, I know

She told me, don't worry about it
She told me, don't worry no more
We both know we can't go without it
She told me you'll never be alone, oh, oh, woo (yeah, yeah, yeah)

I can't feel my face when I'm with you
But I love it, but I love it, oh
I can't feel my face when I'm with you (I can't feel my face)
But I love it (but I love it), but I love it, oh
I can't feel my face when I'm with you (I can't feel my face when I'm with you)
But I love it (but I love it, yeah), but I love it (but I love it, yeah), oh
I can't feel my face when I'm with you (I can't feel my face when I'm with you)
But I love it (but I love it), but I love it (girl, I love it), oh

Ooh, ooh
She told me, don't worry about it
She told me, don't worry no more
We both know we can't go without it (can't go)
She told me you'll never be alone, oh, oh

Woo
I can't feel my face when I'm with you (I can't feel my face, girl)
But I love it (but I love it, yeah), but I love it (oh, I love it, yeah), oh
I can't feel my face when I'm with you (said, I can't feel my face, girl)
But I love it (but I love it), but, I love it (girl, I love it), oh

(Hey) I can't feel my face when I'm with you (I can't feel my face when I'm with you)
But I love it (know I love it, girl), but I love it (don't you think I, yeah)
I can't feel my face when I'm with you (I can't feel my face when I'm with you)
(I can't feel my face, girl)
But I love it (when I'm with you, baby), but I love it (said when I'm with you, baby)

Overall Meaning

The Weeknd's song "Can't Feel My Face" is a song that describes a toxic, yet irresistible relationship that the singer knows is going to end badly. When he says "And I know she'll be the death of me, at least we'll both be numb," he acknowledges that the relationship is detrimental for him. Despite this, being together is too good to resist, and he enjoys the thrill of it, even if it means putting himself in danger. The line "I can't feel my face when I'm with you, but I love it" reinforces the idea that the experience is intense and overwhelming, and he is willing to ignore the consequences for the sake of his infatuation.

The second verse reveals more about the power dynamic in the relationship, where the woman dictates the terms of their interaction. He is told not to worry about their dangerous behavior and about the fact that he won't fall in love. He describes the shared misery that comes with loving someone so much, and the realization that all of it is essential to being in love. The song carries an overall message that the singer is willing to risk everything for this relationship and enjoy every moment, even though it may lead to his destruction.

It really irks me when people say this. Artists DO need to evolve, but artists changing their sound as soon as they go mainstream/get picked up by a label is NOT evolution of their music. It is called *commercialization*. If you want an example of an artist whose music and sound actually evolved, while still remaining commercially successful, look at a band like Radiohead. They have very admirable careers which they successfully advanced on their own terms.

I completely understand why artists want to be financially successful and get rich making their music. But sadly, this almost always comes with high costs, such as the loss of creative control over their work. Their sound gets changed, their music gets "dumbed down" and infused with pop or dance elements, with the sole goal of achieving radio play and appealing to the broadest audience possible (just look at this song for an example. It was clearly manufactured for the radio and MTV).

So when people accuse an artists of 'selling out', they are referring to this process.

As a side note, this can be extremely frustrating as a music lover, but what can you do? In order to be financially successful in the entertainment business you need to tap into the world's largest consumer market, which is in the United States. And unfortunately, the general American public seems to have an atrocious taste in entertainment and so unique artists making good music all too often get butchered in order to appeal to these crowds. That is capitalism at it's finest!
