Oh God Where Are You Now
Sufjan Stevens Lyrics

Oh God, hold me now
Oh Lord, hold me now
There's no other man who could raise the dead
So do what you can to anoint my head

Oh God, where are you now?
Oh Lord, say somehow
The devil is hard on my face again
The world is a hundred to one again
Would the righteous still remain?
Would my body stay the same?

Oh God, hold me now
Oh God, touch me now
There's no other man who could save the dead
There's no other God to place our head

Would the righteous still remain?
Would my body stay the same?

There's no other man who could raise the dead
So do what you can to anoint my head

Oh God, hold me now
Oh Lord, touch me now

First time I heard this song, I was in the back of my friend's car. He and the guy in the front seat both went into a gas station, leaving me in the car alone. When they came back, I was laying in the backseat with tears streaming down my face. The driver glances back, smiles, and says something along the lines of "that was my first reaction to this song, too". You don't have to be religious to have a spiritual experience with this song. It's hauntingly beautiful. For me, at least, it was a literal life changer. Even now, seven years after that first time, I still feel that sense of pensiveness, the sobering melancholy that most of the Michigan album is so adept at conveying. Truly, a masterpiece.

Beautifully said, thank you for sharing. One of my favorite things about life is those special experiences you have with a certain song, when everything aligns at the right time and it just strikes you to your core. Makes you want to believe in Magic or something, and this is definitely one of those songs capable of doing so

Yes it’s an amazing song once you give it the time and patience it needs. I listened to this song every night for about a month straight. I just couldn’t get enough of it once it clicked with me. There’s truly something special and unique about this song.

Agreed. This song is like an auditory valium. My boyfriend put it on a mix for me years ago and it always elicits some level of emotion from me when I hear it. Varying from slightly choked up on an average day to sobbing if it's a night when I've put away a few too many drinks. Lol. But by the end of it the "valium" aspect kicks in and it kinda blisses me out ya know? And like you said, you don't have to be religious to appreciate the simple beauty of the song. A rare gem indeed.

Transcoded Music my thoughts exactly. Lol. But hey, if Lavishbuttocks can have a spiritual experience to this song there's hope for us all. Hehe.

I remember listening to this on the day I got that the call that my grandfather had died. We were extremely close, and for the past five years he struggled with dementia, war flashbacks and in later stages paralysis. It was bittersweet and a extremely difficult feeling to process.
