Running Out Of Time
Sugar Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Used to think "I've got time", live for tomorrow
So far to go
Not so much like the rest, a throwback forward
Always finding the flow
Out of reasons and rhymes
Out of rhythm and time
Lost the beat and the notes, true north, the grounding
So far to go
Lost days facing dreams, the drive, the hounding
Counting back to zero
Out of reasons and rhymes
Out of rhythm and time
Runway falling away into the rear-view rear
So far to go
Can imagination truly disappear
I think I may know
May I know

Out of reasons and rhymes
Out of rhythm and time

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sugar's song "Running Out of Time" seem to reflect a feeling of urgency and the realization that time may be running out. The opening line, "Used to think 'I've got time', live for tomorrow" suggests that the singer used to believe that there was plenty of time, always looking ahead to the future. However, they now feel that they have "so far to go" and are "out of rhythm and time", indicating a sense of being behind or off-track.

The lyrics also mention being "a throwback forward", which could suggest that the singer feels out of place or different from others, but still moves forward in their own unique way. They mention losing the beat, the notes, and true north, indicating a loss of direction or grounding. The line "lost days facing dreams, the drive, the hounding" may suggest a feeling of frustration or pressure to achieve their dreams, but struggling to find the motivation or energy.

The lyrics continue to explore the theme of time slipping away, with the metaphor of the runway falling away into the rear-view mirror. The question "Can imagination truly disappear" suggests that the singer is contemplating the possibility of losing their creative drive or passion. The repetition of "out of reasons and rhymes, out of rhythm and time" reinforces the feeling of being overwhelmed or lacking inspiration.

Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of urgency, frustration, and a fear of not being able to fulfill one's dreams or find their true purpose. It captures the anxieties that can come with the realization that time is limited and the pressure to make the most of it.

@joyofsox

It's an outtake from Copper Blue sessions. It was first released on the "Born to Choose" compilation album, in October 1993. That was a live version also.
