Global interest in Boyle was triggered by the contrast between her powerful voice and her plain appearance on stage. The juxtaposition of the audience's first impression of her with the standing ovation she received after her performance led to an international media and Internet response. Within nine days of the audition, videos of Boyle — from the show, various interviews, and her 1999 rendition of "Cry Me a River" — had been watched over 100 million times, an online record. Despite the sustained media interest, she later finished in second place in the final of the show, behind dance troupe Diversity.
Boyle's first album, I Dreamed a Dream, was released on 23 November 2009, and has become Amazon's best-selling album in pre-sales. Its first single is a cover of the Jagger/Richards song "Wild Horses." The album includes "You'll See," "I Dreamed a Dream," and "Cry Me a River." According to Billboard, "The arrival of "I Dreamed a Dream" ... marks the best opening week for a female artist's debut album since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991."

Climbing mountains, chasing dreams
All of my life, you gave me everything
But you don't have to give the world to me
Just say you love me as I am,
Say you want me as I am,
Say I'm someone in your eyes,
Oh, just let me go, I know one day if I'm allowed,
If I'm allowed, one day I'll make you proud
All of your life, you've taken chances
Broke the rules time after time
All of your life, you've gone your own way,
Give me this chance, and I'll go mine
Why can't you say, you love me as I am,
Say you, want me as I am,
Say I'm someone in your eyes,
That's all I want it to be
Oh, just let me go, I know one day if I'm allowed,
If I'm allowed, one day I'll make you proud
Oh, one day I'll make you proud
Mmm
And trying to please you now, it's all I seem to do
I'm holding my dreams down, it's breaking me in two
I've got to be me now 'cause there's already one of you
I'm on my knees so help me please
Please don't shoot me down
Though you can't see it now
Someday I'll make you proud
The lyrics of Susan Boyle's song "Proud" speak about the struggle of a child to earn the love and approval of their parent. The verse is addressed to a parent who has led a remarkable life and accomplished extraordinary things- climbing mountains, chasing dreams and taking risks. The child acknowledges the sacrifices the parent has made in their life and recognizes that they have given everything to make their child's life better. However, instead of feeling grateful and satisfied, the child craves for the love and affection of the parent. The child does not want the world to be given to them, all they want is to be loved for who they are. They want their parent to accept them as a flawed human being and not wish to change them.
Later on, in the song, the child realizes that they cannot keep living their life to please their parent. They are being crushed under the weight of their own dreams and aspirations that they are not allowed to pursue. The child asks for help and begs to not be shot down. The child expresses faith in their own abilities and dreams and promises to make their parent proud someday.
Overall, the song is a deeply emotional and relatable tribute to the struggle each one of us goes through to be seen and accepted by our loved ones.

Climbing mountains, chasing dreams

But you don't have to give the world to me
However, there is no need for you to give me the whole world
Just say you love me as I am,
Merely profess your love for me in my present state
Say you want me as I am,
Admit that you desire me just as I am
Say I'm someone in your eyes,
State that in your perspective, I am an individual of worth
That's all I want it to be

If you give me this opportunity, I, too, will pursue my own course
Why can't you say, you love me as I am,
Why can't you indicate that you love me just as I am

Oh, one day I'll make you proud
Oh, eventually, I will make you proud
And trying to please you now, it's all I seem to do

I'm on my knees so help me please

Please don't shoot me down
Please refrain from destroying my dreams
Though you can't see it now
Although it is currently not visible to you
Someday I'll make you proud
In due time, I will undoubtedly make you proud
