Global interest in Boyle was triggered by the contrast between her powerful voice and her plain appearance on stage. The juxtaposition of the audience's first impression of her with the standing ovation she received after her performance led to an international media and Internet response. Within nine days of the audition, videos of Boyle β from the show, various interviews, and her 1999 rendition of "Cry Me a River" β had been watched over 100 million times, an online record. Despite the sustained media interest, she later finished in second place in the final of the show, behind dance troupe Diversity.
Boyle's first album, I Dreamed a Dream, was released on 23 November 2009, and has become Amazon's best-selling album in pre-sales. Its first single is a cover of the Jagger/Richards song "Wild Horses." The album includes "You'll See," "I Dreamed a Dream," and "Cry Me a River." According to Billboard, "The arrival of "I Dreamed a Dream" ... marks the best opening week for a female artist's debut album since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991."

Silent Night
Susan Boyle Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon' Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night, holy night
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing alleluia
Christ, the Savior is born
Christ, the Savior is born
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon' Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
The song starts with the phrase "Silent night, holy night" which sets the tone of the song as peaceful and divine. The next line "All is calm, all is bright" emphasizes the tranquility of the moment. Then, the song shifts its focus to the nativity scene, "Round yon' Virgin Mother and Child". This line highlights the centrality of Mary and Jesus in the scene. The following line "Holy Infant so tender and mild" is a description of Jesus as a newborn who is vulnerable and gentle. The song then moves on to the chorus "Sleep in heavenly peace" which brings forth the idea of Jesus being at peace and through him, humanity can also find peace.
The second stanza of the song introduces the shepherds and their reaction to the heavenly event. "Shepherds quake at the sight" emphasizes their humble reaction and surprise at the awe-inspiring event. The line "Glories stream from heaven afar" suggests that the event is not just limited to the nativity scene, but its impact is widespread. Then, the song brings forth the mention of the heavenly choir which is singing "alleluia". Finally, the focus shifts back to the birth of Christ and emphasizes that he is the savior.
Through these lyrics, the song expresses the beauty and awe of the nativity scene and how it is an event that transcends beyond the physical boundaries of that moment. The focus is on the peace and hope that the birth of Jesus brings to humanity.
