Two-Step Round The Christmas Tree
Suzy Bogguss Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a wondrous sight and a joyful sound
Every Christmas Eve in a western town
Gather up the kids all the friends and family
'Cause the holly's hung and the candle's bright
Tuning up a fiddle on a moonlit night
Roll back the rug so we can two step 'round the Christmas tree.

There's a jolly man in a bright red suit
Did you ever see a Santa in cowboy boots
Twirling across the floor spurs a-jingling merrily
As they sing those carols soft and low
We'll all be shouting out cotton-eyed Joe
Roll back the rug so we can two step 'round the Christmas tree

Waiting 'neath the mistletoe you'll never get a kiss
I never move that slow there's too much I could miss
Cause a western girl can't be still
and a silent night is not for me
Roll back the rug so we can two step 'round the Christmas Tree

Red Bandanas, kelly green,
Silver buckles on new blue jeans
Shufflin' 'round the room to a yule tide melody
I'm gonna be ready when Santa's comes
But I'm gonna be dancing till he does
Roll back the rug so we can two step 'round the Christmas tree

Waiting 'neath the mistletoe you'll never get a kiss
I never move that slow there's too much I could miss
'Cause a western girl can't be still
and a silent night is not for me

Roll back the rug so we can two step 'round the Christmas Tree

Overall Meaning

"Two-Step Round The Christmas Tree" by Suzy Bogguss is a playful country holiday song that celebrates Christmas traditions in a western town. The first verse describes the scene of an excited community gathering with friends and family on Christmas Eve, accompanied by the holly and candles that are brightened up for the occasion. The tune of a fiddle adds to the festive atmosphere, and the rug is rolled back to make space for the two-step dance around the Christmas tree. The second verse mentions a Santa in cowboy boots, who starts twirling across the floor with his jingling spurs, and everyone starts singing carols softly in the background. Red bandanas, kelly green, new blue jeans with silver buckles, and a yuletide melody contribute to this Western-style celebration of Christmas. The song closes with a mention of the playful attitude of the Western girl, who prefers the energetic two-step dance around the Christmas tree to waiting for a kiss under the mistletoe.

One of my all time favorite Christmas songs! You just can't help but be in a good mood and in the holiday spirit when you hear it. I wish older country Christmas songs like this were still played on the radio.

A COWBOY CHRISTMAS is the cassette, and you can still get it if ya look hard. This is the all time best Christmas goup of songs ever put together. Michael Martin Murphy is the main singer, but man oh day but he has some fantastic folks doing a superb job on this one. Gotta be somebody that could transfer this over to a CD... gotta be some one somewhere.
