I don't think he was a genius. I think he was a talented guy that did far too many drugs and destroyed too many brain cells. He was very creative, inventive and smart but the word genius is too often used to give the word any real utility.

The structuring of his songs and how he went about constructing them is absolutely uniquely creative, and something that had hardly been done before. The definition of a genius is "a person who is exceptionally intelligent or creative, either generally or in some particular respect" and I'd say Syd Barrett was exceptionally intelligent and creative, even if his mental health issues destroyed his quality of life.

Spettacolare. È tutto così confusionario e incredibilmente orchestrato allo stesso tempo. Ogni strumento sembra che vada per i cavoli suoi ma nell'insieme è tutto così perfettamente parallelo. La chitarra poi ha un sound così svogliato e menefreghista che sembra quasi volutamente scordata. Syd aveva un senso del tempo eccezionale, come pochi. Come spezzava i tempi a tradimento riuscendo a rendere la cosa fottutamente orecchiabile comunque, lo sapeva solo lui. Era uno di quelli che bisognava lasciarlo fare, perchè mentre metteva in piedi tutto questo apparente casino un pezzo alla volta, chiunque (fra quelli che seguono solo ed esclusivamente la logica) non c'avrebbe capito una mazza fino a che il quadro non fosse completo. Solo alla fine tutto assume un senso. È come quando si fa un puzzle senza sapere quale sarà l'immagine finale che dovremo comporre, all'inizio non si capisce bene che cosa si sta componendo, alle volte può sembrare che ci si stia sbagliando ad assemblare questo o quel pezzo perchè la logica non riesce a concepire cosa possa essere l'immagine che si sta creando al momento, ma quando tutti i pezzi vengono messi al loro posto ecco che il quadro diventa molto più nitido.
Syd era così, lui sapeva gia qual'era l'immagine del puzzle ancora prima di unire i pezzi, per questo non era capito. I produttori delle case discografiche dettati dalla logica non capivano cosa stava facendo durante le sessioni di registrazione e non facevano altro che lamentarsi ma poi guarda alla fine che cavolo ti tirava fuori. Posso capire da un verso la frustrazione dei produttori discografici che per loro era un po' come badare un bambino (dato i noti problemi di droga e i comportamenti bizzarri che aveva Syd) e avrebbero apprezzato un comportamento più sobrio e professionale ma l'unico modo per me era lasciarlo fare, lasciarli la briglia sciolta. I risultati poi arrivavano, non c'è dubbio.
