London Boys
T. Rex Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh yea we're the London boys
Oh yea we're the London boys
Oh yea we're the London boys
Oh yea we're the London boys
Do you remember
Going to Petticoat Lane
With all the conceptions
Moving in your brain
Oh yea we're the London boys
Oh yea we're the London boys
Don't you remember that we're just the London boys
Oh yea we're the London boys
Mighty mean mod king
Dressed like fame
London to Brighton
And then back again
Changing life's patterns
To get to the top

And when you get up there
You don't know if you're there or what

Overall Meaning

In T. Rex's song "London Boys," the lyrics are an ode to the subculture of young men growing up in London during the 1960s. The song celebrates the sense of rebellion, energy and ambition that characterized the era. The repetition of the phrase "Oh yea we're the London boys" is a rallying cry that reminds the listener of the sense of camaraderie that existed between the young people of London. The chorus also highlights the pride that these boys felt about being from London, a city which was synonymous with freedom, excitement and possibility.

The verses speak more specifically about the experiences of young men growing up in London at the time. The reference to Petticoat Lane in the second verse is significant as it was a well-known street market which sold everything from clothing to food. This was a popular destination for young Londoners looking for cheap and fashionable clothes. The phrase "with all the conceptions moving in your brain" suggests that these young men were full of ideas and big plans for their future.

The final verse is the most evocative, as it describes the journey that these London boys went on to achieve their dreams. The line "changing life's patterns to get to the top" speaks to the drive and determination that these young men had to succeed, while the lines "And when you get up there, you don't know if you're there or what" suggest that the journey was as important as the destination. The song is a testament to the spirit of youth and the belief that anything is possible.

Thank you Marc my dear friend ! xxx

David Bowie did a song called London Boys early in his career but it's not the same song as here. Just curious because Marc and David were childhood friends..

@beltanetrex

A good latter-day T.REX boogie rock song, though I prefer the more aggressive, guitar distorted version on the "Dazzling Raiment Alternate Futuristic Dragon" CD. Love both though.
