Seagull Woman
T. Rex Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One day she came like a seagull woman
One day she came
One day she came like a seagull woman
One day she came
One Day

One day we change from children into people
One day we change
One day she went like a seagull woman

Overall Meaning

In the song Seagull Woman by T. Rex, the lyrics seem to revolve around the idea of change and transformation. The first stanza describes the arrival of a woman, who is likened to a seagull. The metaphor of a seagull can suggest a variety of ideas such as freedom, independence, but also lightness and fleetingness. It may hint at the fact that the arrival of this woman is not permanent, and indicates the ephemeral and unexpected nature of change. The chorus then repeats to emphasise her arrival, while the second stanza speaks to the idea that people go through a significant change from childhood to adulthood. However, the third stanza reveals that the woman has left, just as unannounced as she had arrived. This suggests that change may not always be within our control, and can leave us feeling unbalanced or uncertain.

The ambiguity and poetic quality of the lyrics make it possible for listeners to relate to the song in various ways. Some may interpret it as a love song, where the seagull woman represents a lover who has come and gone. Others may see it as a commentary on the often-unpredictable nature of life and the changes that come with it.

Love this song.

One day we changed from children into people...seems like a regrettable decision in hindsight! Marc was Peter Pan, though, and never needed to grow up and face the sobering transition. Dead 2 weeks before his 30th birthday. RIP Fairy Prince of Boogie!
