Sunken Rags
T. Rex Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's a shame it's sunken rags
The way you play me down
It's a shame the way you hide me in the electric school
I was brave to call your name
Down in the alleyway
It's a shame the way you treat me like a fool
So ride on, fight on
Love is gonna win
It's gonna beat your sins
Fight on, ride on
Love is gonna win
It's gonna beat your sins
It's a game with broken brain
The way you smile on me
I'm a bird that rides upon your window fools

It's a shame how you unzip my winter poetry
It's a shame the way you treat me like a fool

Overall Meaning

T. Rex's "Sunken Rags" is a lament about feeling treated poorly by a lover. The singer is expressing sadness and frustration over being made to feel like a fool by someone they love. The lyrics use some interesting imagery to convey this message. For example, the idea of being hidden in the electric school is a metaphor for feeling invisible and ignored. The metaphor of being a bird that rides upon your window fools is meant to convey a sense of vulnerability and dependence.

Throughout the song, the singer tries to rise above this mistreatment by urging themselves to "ride on" and "fight on." They suggest that "love is gonna win" and that it will "beat your sins." In other words, the singer believes that ultimately, love will conquer all and that the hurt they feel now will be overcome.

Despite this hopeful message, the overall tone of the song is one of sadness and melancholy. Marc Bolan's voice is mournful and the instrumentation is soft and gentle. It's as if the song is trying to capture the feeling of being hurt by someone who was supposed to love you, while also holding out hope that things will get better.

It sounds so much like the New York Dolls at their peak. I bought this single from the Ex-Jukebox record shop in York, 1973..so I was 11 years old. Great vocals and should have been a single in its own right. Bolan was so so so great!

@jeffreycafferelli6973

Correct me if I wrong but the T Rex single came out before the NY Dolls release.

@nicholasalvarez9843
