Gátu Ríma
TYR Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Gestur villur frá høllini gongur
Blindur er hann og fáur
Møtir hann einum gomlum manni
Allur í hærum gráur

Far tú tær í grasagarð
Og ráð fyri tíni bú
Eg skal mær fyri Heiðrik kong
Eg gátur kenni nú

Treðum lættliga dansin
Dagurin skín so fagurliga
Komin er hægst á summarið

Tríati eru gáturnar
Git mær ein av teim
Hvussu eiter sá reyða trumma
Ið slær yvur allan heim?

Vita man eg gátuna
Eg giti tað fyrstu av teim
Toran eitur sá reyða trumma
Ið slær yvur allan heim

Treðum lættliga dansin
Dagurin skín so fagurliga
Komin er hægst á summarið

Vita man eg gátuna
Eg fari ei við tí hátt
Óðin ríður sínum hesti
Bæði um dag og nátt

Óðin gjørdist villini fuglar
Fleyg sær út í hav
Brendi inni Heiðrik kong
Og alt tað lið, har var

Treðum lættliga dansin

Dagurin skín so fagurliga
Komin er hægst á summarið

Overall Meaning

The song "Gátu Ríma" by Tyr tells a story of a blind man named Gestur who wanders away from his home and meets an old man. The old man is described as being gray-haired and Gestur is blind and alone. The lyrics then shift to a scene in a grassy garden where the singer advises that he will solve a riddle for King Heiðrik. The next verse speaks of a light dance and beautiful shining sun in the summertime. The third and fourth verses contain the riddle of three gates and a crimson drum that can be heard throughout the world, with the answer being the name of the drum, "Toran". The final verse mentions the god Odin, who has the power to transform into a bird and travels both day and night. He caused havoc by burning down the fortress of King Heiðrik and killing all of the soldiers.

The lyrics of "Gátu Ríma" showcase elements of traditional folklore, riddles, and storytelling. The blind man and old man meeting contain elements of vulnerability and isolation. The dance and summertime imagery provide a stark contrast to the violence and destruction mentioned later in the song. The riddle of the three gates and the crimson drum creates a sense of mystery and intrigue, as the answer to the riddle is not immediately clear. The final verse with Odin highlights the power of divine beings and their ability to cause significant chaos and destruction.
