Zeit
Tangerine Dream Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Tangerine Dream's song Zeit, which features the Persian language vocals of Jakeh, speak of a sense of emotional distance between two people. The verse "جیکو | دیگه واسه جبران لحظه ها دیره | مثه دود سیگار داره این لحظه ها میره" (Jakeh | It's too late to make up for the moments | Like smoke, these moments disappear) suggests that the moments that the singer wanted to share with the other person have already passed and are now too late to recapture. The lyrics continue to describe the singer's sense of futility, stating "اگه برگردی هم چیزی عوض نمیشه | میدونم الان خوشحاله پیشت | حتی بودنتم دیگه فرقی نداره" (If you come back, nothing will change | I know now they are happy behind you | Even my being here doesn't matter anymore). The singer acknowledges that the other person has moved on without them and that their presence in the other person's life is no longer significant. The final lines express a sense of resignation and acceptance: "اگه برگردم باز حالت خرابه | میخندی و میگی این حرفا ارزشی نداره | اکی هم نگو واسه من بی" (If I return, things will still be broken | You'll smile and say these words have no value | It's okay, don't say it to me anymore).

The song Zeit was released on Tangerine Dream's 1982 album of the same name. The use of Persian vocals was a departure from the band's usual style, which was predominantly instrumental electronic music. The use of traditional Middle Eastern instruments in the song, such as the ney and santur, further highlights the fusion of Eastern and Western music. The song has been interpreted as a commentary on the political situation in Iran at the time, as the lyrics reflect the feelings of displacement and loss that many Iranians experienced during the Islamic Revolution.

hey! you avant lovers like me..........might enjoy my Tronic Uke (!) or my Guitar Sorcery......(I play outdoors every night in New England cities with tourists and do trippy / avant instrumentalism.....and to my shock, all the "normal" ppl LOVE it! They've never been exposed to Avant Music! I play to every person with eyes and ears, so many are stunned by art-rock and love it! Old and young! Rich and poor!)

(To my REAL shock....the public loves my MOST AVANT stunts the most! I assumed they'd want my melodic stuff the most. But nope. They want to have their minds BLOWN.)

the TRONIC UKE!

Zeit always draws a picture of long lost planets, far away in another universe. that "drone" of ethereal "ommness" - was my initiation to the dream in 1977. - it took a while to appreciate the music on all 4 sides, but once you "get it", -turn all the lights out, put a josstick on, and let your mind drift along with it's pulsating eeriness? it's a real winner.

@aubreylear

what's a josstick?

The early TD's influence is so vast - for instance (just in case you didn't know) it's worth checking the curious influence it had on the Norwegian BM scene and its musicians ( Fenriz, Vikernes, ...) - Darkthrone's Fenriz's Neptune Towers project with 2 albums inspired by the ''difficult'' cosmic sounds emanating from the first 4 albums; Burzum's old and relatively recent electronic passages are also strongly invocational of TD's legacy. Even Mayhem had a track offered by Conrad Schnitzler, immortalised under ''Sylvester Anfang''. I think i can track the sense of all this , even though it may sound as breaking a taboo for the generally leftist TD's ethos : the cosmicity of their sounds and music matches psychic images and mental projections of the gods in the Wotanist Pantheon. It's not only the Cosmos, it's landscapes of massive stone and vast lands of tundra and ice. Either we/they like it or not, it's still music from the North...
