Tarja began to study music at age six, and moved to the city of Kuopio at 18 to study at the Sibelius Academy. She married Argentinian businessman Marcelo Cabuli in early 2003.

She is the former lead singer of the Finnish band Nightwish which she founded along with Emppu Vuorinen and Tuomas Holopainen in 1996. After being expelled from the band in October 2005, Tarja Turunen is now devoting her time to her solo career under the stage name of Tarja.

During the spring of 2005, she prepared a collaboration with Germany's Martin Kesici, the duet Leaving You for Me, also accompanied by a video. On November 8th 2006, Tarja's first solo album, Henkäys Ikuisuudesta was released as a Christmas album.

Tarja's second solo album, My Winter Storm, was released in November 2007 and achieved gold status in Finland on the day of release. The album took the number 1 spot in the Finnish charts. Tarja also sings on track In The Picture, composed by Rage guitarist Victor Smolski, on Nuclear Blast Allstars' album 'Into The Light', 2007. In 2009, Tarja released a duet with Doro Pesch, the former vocalist for heavy metal band Warlock.

Tarja's third solo album, What Lies Beneath was released in Finland on September 1, 2010. The album sold around 1,300 copies in the United States in its first week of release, landing it position 24 on the Top New Artist Albums chart. This is the first album on which Tarja is credited for composition on every original track.

I love this song, especially when she says "Diva! Diva! Diva!". She is the ultimate Diva female vocalist that I have heard in my lifetime. I might be a little biased because I am Finnish, but I doubt it. Tarja has the voice that men have gone to war for or crashed their ships into reefs following her siren song. This song is so clearly a message to Nightwish that they made a mistake firing her.

She has yet to make one single good song that compliments her voice.. only Tuomas could write music that fit her voice. This is horrible, but better than a lot of the other stuff shes released - and thats saying alot.

@TheAnimaAnimal Firstly, I never commented on whether she was happy or not. Secondly, I never commented on her departure from the band or the band for that matter - so you comment makes no sense. Your hypocrisy is mindblowing. Attacking me for being bitter, while your whole comment is nothing but a bitter slander towards Nightwish. I only stated that she fails to make good music, which judging by her mere 37k views in 4 years is enough said. I can say the same for Floor Jansen, fantastic vocalist but poor music writer.

Can you be more bitter? We ALL wish Tarja would've stayed in the band or gotten along enough for a collab or two. Get over it, she's in a happier place doing what she loves with loyal happy fans that still love what she does. If you could spare any annoyance at all it shouldn't be on Tarja and her stable career but on the rest of the Nightwish band and Toumas. THEY were the ones that forced her to leave the band, not Tarja herself. They dropped the ball and didn't try to compromise or anything at all so that she might still be with them for one more album or a few conserts after End of an Era before she formally tells them that she'll leave the band (as she promised she would). No, they left a public letter telling her it was over.

Your bitterness is wasted on Tarja who is actually happy with what she has compared to the current Nightwish: Marco gone, Toumas being happier with his side projects and Floor focusing more on promoting herself as opposed to the band.
