My mom was 18, waitin' for her prom date
My mother was 18 years old, eagerly awaiting the arrival of her date to the prom

My father was her date, and she was excited for the wonderful time she was going to have

Two years prior they both created Aaron Yates

My father didn't show up, leaving my mother alone in her prom dress on the night of the dance

Where all the stress hit aggressively, she had her first epileptic seizure
The stress of the situation caused my mother to have an epileptic seizure

And kept havin' them, doctor, help the sick lady
My mother experienced more seizures and needed medical assistance

Medicine with the quickness, just maybe it'll stop
My mother was given medicine quickly in the hopes that it would control her seizures

'Member this, in '80 I was, nine
This all happened in 1980, when I was nine years old

Asleep and I heard somethin' collapse
I was asleep when I heard a loud noise

Hopped up with nothin' but tighty whitie
I quickly got out of bed, wearing only my underwear

Saw my mom just fell and slapped the floor
I saw my mother fall to the ground and hit her head

She shakin', I'm scared, I ran out the house in my underwear
My mother was shaking and I was afraid, so I ran outside in my underwear

"Help my mama" is all that's comin' out my mouth
All I could say was "help my mother"

A neighbor came to help so mama wouldn't die
A neighbor came to assist and ensure that my mother didn't die

Dear Darkness, you've been with me for so long
I have experienced darkness and struggle for a long time

I never understood, 'til now in this slow song
Only now, in this slower and more contemplative song, do I truly understand my struggles

Been in some shaky situations, but life goes on
I have been in difficult and dangerous situations, but life continues

But still, a lot of things you showed this kid was so wrong
Despite everything, I learned many negative things from my struggles

But what's so right, this pain and strife that I go write
Despite the negativity, I use my pain and struggles as inspiration to create music

People go buy it, they think that my flow's tight
Others enjoy my music and appreciate the emotions and experiences that I share

Got a cold mic, they got me a million sold twice
My music is successful and has sold millions of copies

Not a low-life anymore it’s always sold-out show nights
I'm no longer struggling financially and my shows are always sold-out

After K.O.D. you scared me, so I ran from you
After my K.O.D. album, I was afraid of the darkness and tried to avoid it

Then accepted you on Seepage, then saw the fans come through
I eventually accepted my struggles and darkness, and saw that fans appreciated this aspect of my music

Just when I thought I took everything I can stand from you
Just when I thought I couldn't handle any more struggles and hardship

I kept writing and then we watched the Strangeland come true
I continued to write about my experiences and struggles, and then saw success and prosperity through my label, Strange Music

So now I see, these stories in my life
Now I understand the meaning behind the events in my life

I was meant to share my darkness within my light
I was always meant to share my struggles and negative experiences within my music and persona

People say it helps them to see me fly
Others are inspired by my rise to success and positivity, despite my struggles

From the bottom, that’s motivation for them all, now I see exactly why
My story has motivated and inspired others, and now I understand why it all had to happen
