Call It Off
Tegan and Sara Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I won't regret saying this
This thing that I'm saying
Is it better than keeping my mouth shut?
That goes without saying

Call, break it off
Call, break my own heart
Maybe I would have been something you'd be good at
Maybe you would have been something I'd be good at

But now we'll never know
I won't be sad
But in case, I'll go there
Everyday, to make myself feel bad
There's a chance I'll start to wonder
If this was the thing to do

I won't be out long
But I still think it better if
You take your time coming over here
I think that's for the best

Call, break it off
Call, break my own heart
Maybe I would have been something you'd be good at
Maybe you would have been something I'd be good at

But now we'll never know
I won't be sad
But in case, I'll go there
Everyday, to make myself feel bad
There's a chance I'll start to wonder
If this was the thing to do

I'll start to wonder
If this was the thing to do

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tegan and Sara's "Call It Off" can be interpreted as a contemplation of the aftermath of a breakup. The singer seems to be struggling with whether or not to call off the relationship and break their own heart, or to continue on, unsure of whether the relationship could have worked out. They express the idea that perhaps they could have been good for each other, but will never know because they didn't give it a chance.

The lyrics convey a sense of regret and a longing to know what could have been. The singer seems to be second-guessing themselves, wondering if breaking up was the right decision or if they should have worked harder to make the relationship work. The line "Everyday, to make myself feel bad" suggests that the singer is punishing themselves by dwelling on the breakup, even if they don't necessarily feel sad about it.

Overall, the lyrics paint a picture of someone who is grappling with the aftermath of a breakup and the many what-if scenarios that come with it.

I miss these indie days, felt like a band who wrote and performed their own songs could change the world and influence a generation, my music producer friend and I used to jam to Tegan and Sara all the time, I wanna throw him some love as we've been through so much together over the years, try searching Lonely Gimmick - Beaches, its got that old school indie sound and its one of those songs that makes me happy when I listen to it. I'm honestly so impressed he made it, did it all himself on his laptop
