For the non-clarinetists listening to this, his upper altissimo work (that's the really high stuff) is amazing. At 1:46 he goes up to concert A and just stays up there playing around. Been playing clarinet for 50 years and never seen that note written in a song. Gone up to concert G a couple of times in some Sousa marches and in some Benny Goodman stuff but never above that. Goodman goes up there to an A in the "Hollywood Hotel" version of Sing, Sing, Sing but he just holds it for a few beats for effect; he doesn't play it lyrically like Shaw. IMHO, Shaw was the better technician but Goodman was the better entertainer. Other than both being perfectionists, both guys approached music differently. Check out their bios sometime.

For me, it just sounds like a wonderful scenic illustration of sound. For me, the depression was Brother Can You Spare A Dime by Bing Crosby. Lot of that music seemed happy despite the era.

I grew up on this stuff in the 70s. There was an old guy down the street who had been a radio announcer in the 40s and he had tons of this stuff. We used to sit on his front porch and listen. This may be the best clarinet piece ever recorded. Thanks for the video, too. You can hear this influence in the great TV theme songs that followed - Perry Mason for example.

My father turned me on to big band music when i moved into his place as a young teenager. I love good music, makes no difference the year. I now have a big collection of vinyl. Going from the 40s up until it became unpopular. He served in WWII in the United States Army. I served in the United States Air Force currently retired, action in the gulf conflict.
Songs just pop into my mind from time to time. This was one. Rather than firing up all my audio equipment I decided just to give it a quick lesson on YouTube definitely not the same sound unfortunately. Tomorrow's another day. Good music is timeless, whether it was written in the 70s 80s 40s makes no difference.

First time I heard this song,it felt like it was playing for hours.The bass drum/sax walking line dragged on for what felt like the most amazing clarinet filled hours of my life.Coming from a 15 year old high school musician,I have to say our generation of music in general, and even jazz in particular,has declined as the new gateways have opened for genres.Just know that there are still youths from the 90s that treat this music like gold bars stashed away in Fort Knox and always will. -MJPIII

Ryan really sets the tone for Rapture, even after his death in the first game. Fontaine was pretty interesting, and Lamb... eh, I thought she was a little hackneyed, but still well executed. Ryan, in my opinion at least, is the lead thematic element from which all the other villains' reactions can be derived.

Can just see Billie Holiday sitting besides Artie Shaw at the piano, all night as he finished writing this piece. Watching over the harbour skyline, staring into the distance. Just the 2 of them and their pain.

Love this piece. For me it's not the gangster themesong people make it out to be. But a translation of the pain and suffering they had to endure during their touring days. The racism and discrimination and the sticking together as a band standing for what's right. Standing right besides Billie Holiday. This for me is the accumulation of that tour they did together, Artie and Billie and the band.

Well, in a sense that was Artie Shaw. Nightmarish he was (huge ego, perfectionist, horrible mood swings), and erotic (a lot of women in his life). But, he left a legacy of great music, he was a true American musical genius.

First heard this song about 10 years ago. I recall a friend of mine showing me this b/c he was learning it in one of the Jazz classes he took at UIC. He told me Artie Shaw was not always allowed to play this song at bars b/c of its dark, gloomy and mischievous sound.

Yes, it appears in The Aviator with DiCaprio as Howard Hughes. To me, it is amazing because, as great of a director as Scorsese is and as great of an actor as DiCaprio is, when this music plays, it dominates the scene.

When Shaw first went on the air with his band someone mentioned to him that most bands of the time had a theme song they would open with. So the night before his first broadcast he sat down and came up with this number. It was written at night so he titled it "Nightmare" . These are his own words.

the James Bond Theme was written by Monty Norman not Barry. Barry arranged it and and ripped off these chords from Artie Shaw and then claimed for years he had also written the rest of the theme, he was sued and lost every time simply because he hadn't.

I watched The Aviator long before playing Bioshock 2 but for some reason I fell in love with this song during my Bio2 playthrough.

The funniest thing is that this song isn't even used in a memorable way, it's just the song that plays during the Inner Persephone loading screen.

Yea it was awesome how on Bioshock 1 you could listen to the soundtrack music in the background but on Bioshock 2 only on the loading screens. Never failed that I would let the whole song play through in the loading screen though.

wdmusic1948 talks about altissimo below. For those who don't play clarinet, altissimo is the range above the normal range of the instrument. It's played with split fingerings and is essentially a controlled squeak. If you ever played a reed instrument you know what a squeak is. It's when the reed makes a godawful sound you didn't intend to play. Shaw was a master at playing in the altissimo. I've worked on his Concerto for Clarinet on and off for several years, never really mastering it. Playing up there so high isn't hard but making it sound pleasing to the ear and musical is another matter.
