Formed in Hawthorne, California in 1961, the original group comprised singer-musician-composer and bandleader Brian Wilson, his brothers Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Wilson neighbor David Marks appeared on their first four albums and was a member from 1962 to 1963 as a temporary replacement for Jardine, who had left the group to pursue a career in dentistry.
On their first few studio albums, the group primarily played surf music, but this changed after 1964 as their songs became more sophisticated and autobiographical. The 1965 album Today! particularly represented this shift in sound. Bruce Johnston joined the group that same year. Session drummer Hal Blaine is quoted: "We all studied in conservatories; we were trained musicians. We thought it was a fluke at first, but then we realized Brian was writing these incredible songs. This was not just a young kid writing about high school and surfing."
Following their most esteemed work, Pet Sounds (1966), the band became symbols of psychedelic counterculture. The highly anticipated follow-up, Smile, was left unfinished, and Brian soon relinquished his creative hold on the group. A trilogy of lo-fi releases followed: Smiley Smile (1967), Wild Honey (1967), and Friends (1968). Brian would not be credited as a primary composer for any Beach Boys album until 1977's Love You, an album on the fringe of synth-pop, new wave, and punk.
In Brian's absence, the Beach Boys still managed to release music that was regarded favorably by fans and critics despite poor sales: Sunflower (1970) and Surf's Up (1971). South African musicians Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar played and sang with the band on the next two albums: Carl & the Passions - So Tough (1972), and Holland (1973).
Many changes in both musical style and personnel have occurred in their sometimes-stormy career: Brian Wilson's mental illness and drug addiction; the deaths of Dennis Wilson in 1983 and Carl Wilson in 1998; and continuing legal battles among surviving members of the group. With the release of 1974's Endless Summer they became a more popular touring act, playing their greatest hits. They have recorded 36 Billboard Top 40 hits (including four number-one singles), have had over 100 million sales, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

All This Is That
The Beach Boys Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I am that, thou art that, all this is that
I am that, thou art that, all this is that
This is that
Oooo
Daybreak and I take a glide
Into the pool of peace inside
To waves and I both travel by
(And that makes all the difference to me)
Life supporting waves of bliss
Mother Divine's precious kiss
Brings with love the light of wisdom
And the gift of eternal freedom
To waves and I both travel by
(... and the nature of man...)
And that makes all the difference to me
(Krishna...)
All this is that
I am that, thou art that, all this is that
I am that, thou art that, all this is that
This is that
This is that
Dusk time the shadows fall
Into the timeless time of all
To waves and I both travel by
Golden auras glow around you
Omnipresent love surrounds you
Wisdom warming as the sun
You and I are truly one
To waves and I both travel by
And that makes all the difference to me
I am that, thou art that, all this is that
I am that, thou art that, all this is that
I am that, thou art that, all this is that
I am that, thou art that, all this is that

The song "All This Is That" by The Beach Boys is a complex exploration of spirituality, blending elements of Eastern and Western philosophies to create a unique and uplifting message. The repeated chorus phrase, "I am that, thou art that, all this is that," is a nod to the Hindu concept of Brahman, the universal consciousness that permeates all existence. The song suggests that we are all connected and one with the universe, and that we can discover this truth through meditation and self-discovery. The reference to Krishna reinforces this idea, as he is a central figure in Hinduism and represents the highest state of consciousness.
The verses of the song describe the journey towards discovering this spiritual truth. The singer glides into a "pool of peace inside," where he encounters "life supporting waves of bliss" that are brought by "Mother Divine's precious kiss." These waves represent the energy that flows through all things, and the singer recognizes that he and the waves are one and the same. The song then describes the transition from day to dusk, and how the shadows at dusk represent the timeless nature of the universe. The golden auras and omnipresent love that surround the singer reinforce the message that we are all one with the universe.
Overall, "All This Is That" is a beautifully crafted and layered song that delves into complex spiritual ideas in a way that is accessible and inspirational. The use of imagery, repetition, and powerful language creates a sense of wonder and connection to something greater than ourselves.

@PhenomenalCat
Could be one of the group’s best songs written by members other than Brian, simply sublime.
@musicnauts

Just gorgeous ❤️

Mainly written by Mike Love and All Jardine I believe. Easily the best song on side 2 of Carl and the Passions, which contains some really great music, and was sadly overlooked. The Beach Boys had incorporated two members of a band called Flame for a period of time in the early 70s, and they fit in beautifully.
@PunkingtonGrunge
If I'm not mistaken, those fellas also jammed a bit on Wild Honey back in '67?

Yes, a GREAT album…. I consider it to be from their more ‘adult’ era. Those who think of them as only surf, cars, girls arr missing a LOT.
