Mrs. Robinson
The Beatles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

and here's to you Mrs. Robinson
jesus loves you more than you will know wuwuwu
god bless you please Mrs. Robinson
heaven holds a place for those who pray
hey hey hey...hey hey hey

we like to know a little bit about you for our files
we like to help you learn to help yourself
look around youu all you see are sympathetic lies
stroll around the grounds until you feel at home

and here's to you Mrs. Robinson
jesus loves you more than you will know wuwuwu
god bless you please Mrs. Robinson
heaven holds a place for those who pray
hey hey hey...hey hey hey

Hide it in a hiding place where no one ever goes
Put it in your pantry with your cupcakes
It's a little secret, just the Robinsons' affair
Most of all, you've got to hide it from the kids

Coo, coo, ca-choo, Mrs Robinson
Jesus loves you more than you will know (Wo, wo, wo)
God bless you please, Mrs. Robinson
Heaven holds a place for those who pray
(Hey, hey, hey...hey, hey, hey)

sitting on a sofa on a sunday afternoon
Going to the candidates debate
Laugh about it, shout about it
When you've got to choose
Ev'ry way you look at it, you lose

where have you gone Joe Damajiou
A nation turns its lonely eyes to you wuwuwu
what's that you say
Mrs. robinson

Joe Damajiou has long left and gone away
hey hey hey hey hey hey

Overall Meaning

The Beatles' classic hit "Mrs. Robinson" is a song that tells a story about a married woman in an affair. The song starts with the singer wishing blessings on Mrs. Robinson as they allude to the fact that Jesus loves her more than she knows. They then suggest that they would like to know more about her, not for nefarious reasons but to be able to help her learn to help herself. The lyrics continue to describe how Mrs. Robinson is living a lie, surrounded by sympathetic lies, and that she should take the time to feel at home and be comfortable. The chorus repeats the opening lyrics, emphasizing the idea that heaven holds a place for those who pray.

As the lyrics continue, we learn that Mrs. Robinson is hiding her affair from everyone, including her children. The song goes on to talk about a Sunday afternoon spent watching a debate and how every way you look at it, you lose. The lyrics suggest that there is no right answer, and even if there was, it's not worth fighting for. The song then ends with the singers asking where Joe Damajiou has gone while a nation turns its lonely eyes to him, to which Mrs. Robinson responds that Joe has "long left and gone away."

This is a remarkable cover! Shame they didn't give their own take on it; i.e using their own voices, their own instruments, personalities, themselves at all etc...

I loved the Beatles when growing up. Paul Simon was always my favourite out of the four.
Ah this brings me back to the good old days...

Paul SIMON was NOT a Beatle. PAUL MCCARTNEY WAS THE ORIGINAL. Paul Simon was with Art Garfunkel and sang the above song, Mrs. Robinson. Also sang Sounds of Silence, Bridge over Troubled Waters, to name just a few. Both great bands; not remotely close. YOU MUST NOT BE a child of the '60s-70's. Too bad.
