In My Life
The Beats Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hating on me but you know that ain't a problem though
When I drive in town, I'm seeing people stop and go
Tryna break your frown, you know that shit impossible
My homies hold it down, I fly em' somewhere tropical
Look at my life
Now ask me why I'm anxious
Metaphorical knife
Stabbed in the back no answers
Just tryna do right
I've done some wrongs, who hasn't?
I'm paying the price
Want lights and fame and cameras
I'm tryna do some self-care yea thats RIP to Mac Mill
Cuz I've been feeling angry, momma say I gotta chill
"But how I'm gonna chill when people diss on Forty Mill?!" (Fuck)
Sometimes you just say "Fuck it" and you kick em' to the hills
Hating on me but you know that ain't a problem though
When I drive in town, I'm seeing people stop and go
Tryna break your frown, you know that shit impossible
My homies hold it down, I fly em' somewhere tropical
I been 'round planet Earth maybe one too many times
But imma go around again so I can free my mind
I been smoking Devil's Harvest then I blow it in the sky
I let my lyrics flow a bit, now let em' take you high (Up)
I'm cruisin', switching lanes in my homeboy's Audi
But we gon' put in work and we gon' buy a La Ferrari, ay
Forty for the highway, but you know I do it my way
Hundo-thirty on the dash, yoppas took away my licence
Hating on me but you know that ain't a problem though
When I drive in town, I'm seeing people stop and go

Tryna break your frown, you know that shit impossible
My homies hold it down, I fly em' somewhere tropical

Overall Meaning

The Beat's song "In My Life" starts off with the rapper acknowledging the hate he receives from others but he doesn't see it as a problem. As he drives around town, he notices people staring and he tries to make them smile. He mentions his homies who keep him grounded and takes them on vacations to tropical destinations. Despite his fame and success, he still feels anxious and struggles to move forward. He talks about the pain of being stabbed in the back and the lack of answers to his questions. He recognises that he's made mistakes but is trying to do better. He wants the lights and fame but also wants to take care of himself. He references the late rapper Mac Miller and how his mother says he needs to calm down. However, he struggles to ignore the haters who diss him and sometimes just says "fuck it" and moves on.

The second verse continues the theme of self-reflection and growth. He feels like he may have been "around planet Earth maybe one too many times" but wants to continue to explore and free his mind. He mentions smoking marijuana and using it to fuel his creativity. He cruises around in his friend's Audi but talks about how they plan to work hard and eventually buy a La Ferrari. He mentions going 140mph but also acknowledges the consequences of losing his license. The chorus is repeated, emphasizing that haters don't bother him and that he's trying to spread positivity to those around him.
