From New Orleans, they were classically trained and switched over to jazz as they grew up along with the form. First recorded in 1925, they went on to play vaudeville and ended up on radio in California. After being heard coast to coast on one of the first nationwide radio hookups, they became stars of radio in NYC headlining both their own programs, as well as working on shows with Bing Crosby and The Mills Brothers until the trio disbanded in 1936, mainly due to their marriages. They also appeared in many films of the time. (See youtube)
Connie Boswell, who later changed the spelling of her name to Connee, continued as a solo singer after the demise of the group, influencing singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. She did all this despite being unable to walk alone due to childhood polio and other back injuries.
"There is only one person I ever tried to sing like and that person was Connee Boswell."
Ella Fitzgerald, NBC News interview
"Connee Boswell is, without a doubt, the most widely imitated singer of all time."
Frank Sinatra

Doggone I've Done It
The Boswell Sisters Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Doggone, it hit me from heaven up above
The day I met him, my, I knew I was gone
My heart went kerplunk oh, boy I was sunk
Doggone I've done it, I fell with a thud
It must be springtime 'cos it's in my blood
Mr. Cupid sneaked behind and gave me a shove
Doggone I've done it, I've fallen in love, oh you dove!
I don't use strong expressions
I'm known for my repression
Nobody ever heard me swear
But something's gone and changed me
It's really disarranged me
I'm cuttin' loose and I don't care
Doggone I've done it, I've fallen in love
Doggone, it hit me from heaven above
The day I met him I just knew I was gone
Heart went kerplunk, oh boy I was sunk
Doggone I've done it, I fell with a thud
It must be springtime 'cos it's in my blood
Mr. Cupid sneaked behind and gave me a shove
Doggone I've done it, I've fallen in love.
Doggone I've done it I've fallen in love
Doggone, it hit me from heaven above
Day I met him I knew I was gone
Heart went kerplunk, oh boy I was sunk
Doggone I've done it I fell with a thud
It must be springtime 'cos it's in my blood
Mr. Cupid gave me a shove
Doggone I've done it, I've fallen in love.
The Boswell Sisters' song "Doggone I've Done It" is a joyous celebration of love that hits unexpectedly. The lyrics describe a woman who has fallen head over heels for a man she met recently. The use of the phrase "doggone I've done it" suggests that falling in love was the last thing she intended to do, but it has happened all the same, and now she finds herself swept away by the flood of emotions that it brings.
The opening lines of the song suggest that love has caught the singer off guard. She describes how it "hit" her "from heaven above" and how she "knew" she was "gone" the moment she met him. Describing the feeling as a "kerplunk" emphasizes how sudden and dramatic the impact was. As the song progresses, the singer explains how falling in love has changed her. She says that she is usually known for her "repression" and that nobody has ever heard her swear. However, love has disarranged her and made her "cut loose" in a way that she never has before.
Overall, the song is a playful and light-hearted tribute to the transformative power of love. It celebrates the magic of falling in love and the way that it can turn a person's life upside down in the most wonderful way.

Even though highly arranged this is pure jazz. Conny (or Connee as she called herself later), Martha and Vet were really the first ambassadors of close harmony singing. I love many of their songs as much as when I first discovered them 35 years ago.

Of all the Boswell Sisters' numbers posted on this site not one dud anywhere. They are truly special. They make The Andrews Sisters, who i rate very highly, sound like The Beverly Sisters.
