From New Orleans, they were classically trained and switched over to jazz as they grew up along with the form. First recorded in 1925, they went on to play vaudeville and ended up on radio in California. After being heard coast to coast on one of the first nationwide radio hookups, they became stars of radio in NYC headlining both their own programs, as well as working on shows with Bing Crosby and The Mills Brothers until the trio disbanded in 1936, mainly due to their marriages. They also appeared in many films of the time. (See youtube)
Connie Boswell, who later changed the spelling of her name to Connee, continued as a solo singer after the demise of the group, influencing singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. She did all this despite being unable to walk alone due to childhood polio and other back injuries.
"There is only one person I ever tried to sing like and that person was Connee Boswell."
Ella Fitzgerald, NBC News interview
"Connee Boswell is, without a doubt, the most widely imitated singer of all time."
Frank Sinatra

Shout Sister Shout
The Boswell Sisters Lyrics

lift your voice and sing with me
(scat).
If the Devil grabs your hand,
Here's one thing that he can't stand,
(scat).
Oh Lord!
Up jumps the Devil before you, just keep ploddin' along!
Tell old Satan how you feel,
Get the Devil off your heel,
(scat).
Keep your spirit way up high,
Look up to the sky,
Stand up and shout "Hallelujah, oh-oh!
Hallelujah, oh-oh!".
If that old Devil should grab your hand,
Here's one thing that he can't stand,
Shout sister, shout sister, shout!
Oh Lord!
Shout!
Oh Lord!
(scat)
Oh shout, oh shout!
Oh come on down, just a little bit joy!
(scat)
Oh shout, oh sister shout!
(scat)
(scat)
Just tell old Satan how you feel,
Get that old Devil right off your heel!
Shout sister, shout sister, shout!
Oh Lord!
Shout!
Oh Lord!
The Boswell Sisters' song "Shout Sister, Shout" is a passionate and uplifting call for spiritual liberation from the devil's enslavement. The lyrics encourage listeners to sing out loud and release their souls from the grip of the devil. The key message is that the devil has no power over those who stand up to him with a triumphant spirit. The song's opening lines invite people to join in and sing, suggesting that vocal expression has soul-cleansing power. The scatting technique used in the song adds an element of joyful improvisation that underscores the message of spiritual freedom.
The narrative of the song revolves around walking to the river, a metaphorical journey towards spiritual cleansing. As people sing hallelujah and raise their voices, the devil appears to challenge them. The response to the devil's temptation is to keep moving forward, ignoring his presence and continuing to sing the praises of the Lord. The song urges listeners to declare their independence from anything that would try to hold them back and to stand up with a resounding shout of "Hallelujah!".
Overall, "Shout Sister, Shout" is an empowering and uplifting song about breaking the chains of the past and embracing a bright future. Its message of spiritual liberation resonates with people of all ages and backgrounds.
