Baby, baby it looks like it's gonna hail
Baby, baby it looks like it's gonna hail
You better come inside
Let me teach you how to jive and wail

You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail away!

Papa's in the icebox lookin' for a can of ale
Papa's in the icebox lookin' for a can of ale
Mama's in the backyard learning how to jive and wail

You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail away!

A woman is a woman and a man ain't nothin' but a male
A woman is a woman and a man ain't nothin' but a male
One good thing about him
He knows how to jive and wail

Jack and Jill went up the hill to get a pail
Jack and Jill went up the hill to get a pail
Jill stayed up, she wants to learn how to jive and wail

You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail away!

You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail away!

You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail

You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail
You gotta jump, jive, and then you wail away!

Overall Meaning

The Brian Setzer Orchestra's "Jump Jive An' Wail" is an energetic song that encourages the listener to dance and have a good time. The lyrics convey a message of excitement and anticipation as hail is about to fall and it's time to come inside and jive and wail. The repetition of the phrase "you gotta jump, jive, and then you wail" emphasizes the importance of dancing and enjoying oneself.

The second part of the song introduces Papa and Mama, who are also learning how to jive and wail, and acknowledges the different roles and characteristics between men and women. The lyrics suggest that women are more enthusiastic about dancing than men, and that men are good at jiving and wailing when they decide to participate.

The final stanza references the nursery rhyme of Jack and Jill, adding a playful twist by stating that while Jack went to fetch the pail of water, Jill decided to stay up and learn how to jive and wail. Ultimately, the song encourages everyone to join in and enjoy the music and dancing.

I saw the Cats at the Hollywood Palladium in the early '80s. Things got wild, and bouncers were chasing stage divers away, and Brian got distracted -- while he kept on singing and playing. The scrum fell away (the Palladium's bouncers were rough) and Brian looked around, and went back to his rock and roll voice. While truly distracted from his performance, Brian's voice was naturally better -- much smoother and more refined, with all the notes well within his range and control. Perfect pitch.

I realized, at that moment, that his voice was far beyond anyone else I'd ever seen. Brian Setzer had been singing "down" to everyone else's level, to sing as poorly (in comparison with HIS natural voice) as all the other rock and rollers and popular performers, say, Elvis. Or Jerry Lee. Or Eddie. Or anyone -- from Roger Daltry, to Billy Idol, to John Fogerty, Louis Prima, Louis Jordan, the Jordanaires, anyone. ANYONE. He blew them ALL away in that moment of distraction.

Brian Setzer may be the best singer who has ever lived. So I rejoice in that. Also, I feel a little cheated.

You do you, Brian!

Sing, boy! Sing!

As you tell your kids and grandkids "Yes, there was a time that hip hop, grunge, and swing music coexisted in pop music. We're not sure what the hell was going on."

All I know is we liked swing, dresses, panties, hot ladies and sexy men all at the same time as jazz. Dig it.

@Geek37 I distinctly recall having the thought around 1996 or so where I recognized how great music was at the time, and thought "gee, think how great it'll be in the future!" I couldn't give a rat's ass for new music much past 2000... Man was I wrong.

@bullheimer

I was thinking the same thing as I just watched his 1:19min YouTube live show in canada tonight when he was only 22 in 1981. He was killin it THEN. I watched the whole dammed thing.

I think he's the best guitarist alive right now..

@williamyates694

? I'm classically and jazz trained. And while I love my metal guitarists for their technicality...this is pure brilliance in it's best form. Beauty in simplicity. Only I challenge an average, or above average guitarist to do what this man does in his sleep! Not so simple,
