The group was formed by record producer / composer, Tony Hiller, and originally featured the well-travelled vocalist, Tony Burrows. In 1970 they had a hit single with "United We Stand", which not only was a heavily played record on British radio, but also broke the American market. By the time they broke the voting record for Eurovision and sold well over one million copies of "Save Your Kisses For Me", the line up had totally changed. After Eurovision, they had a number of hits in the UK, including two more chart-toppers, but long term success proved to be elusive.
In 1992, Sandra Stevens told Eurovision Network's magazine that Brotherhood of Man had been shortlisted to sing in A Song for Europe 1983. However she said that the group changed its mind, preferring to be remembered for winning the Eurovision Song Contest as opposed to possibly losing a UK qualifying heat. However their song, "When the Kissing Stops" remained in the contest and was performed by another group, Rubic. It came sixth.
"Save Your Kisses For Me" was nominated as one of the final five finalists in the 50th anniversary Eurovision concert held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in October 2005 and was the highest placed UK song.

Angelo
The Brotherhood of Man Lyrics

High on a mountain in Mexico
Lived a young shepherd boy, Angelo
Who met a young girl and he loved her so
Rich was she,
Came from a very high family,
Angelo knew it could never be,
Running away together
Running away forever
Angelo
Running away from danger
Hiding from every stranger
Angelo
They knew it wasn't wrong
They found a love so strong
They took their lives at night
And in the morning light
They found them on the sand
They saw them lying there, hand-in-hand
Long ago,
High on a mountain in Mexico
Lived a young shepherd boy, Angelo
Who met a young girl and he loved her so
Running away together,
Running away forever,
Angelo
Running away from danger,
Hiding from every stranger,
Angelo
They knew it wasn't wrong
They found a love so strong
They took their lives at night
And in the morning light
They found them on the sand
They saw them lying there, hand-in-hand
Running away together,
Running away forever,
Angelo
Running away from danger,
Hiding from every stranger,
Angelo
They knew it wasn't wrong
They found a love so strong
They took their lives at night
And in the morning light
They found them on the sand
They saw them lying there, hand-in-hand
Running away together,
Running away forever,
Angelo
Hiding from every stranger,
Angelo
They knew it wasn't wrong
They found a love so strong
They took their lives at night
And in the morning light
They found them on the sand
They saw them lying there, hand-in-hand…
The Brotherhood of Man's song "Angelo" tells the story of two young lovers, Angelo and the girl he fell in love with. The song describes living a long time ago in the mountains of Mexico. Angelo was a young shepherd boy who met a girl from a wealthy family. They fell in love despite the difference in their social status. Angelo knew that their love was impossible but they decided to run away together to pursue their destiny. The couple hides from danger, planning to spend the rest of their lives together, free from the prejudices of their society. However, they take their own lives to escape the harsh reality of living in a world that does not accept their love. The song's chorus plays repeatedly, emphasizing that they knew their love was strong, and they did not feel wrong about what they did.
The story of "Angelo" is a common theme in music - Romeo and Juliet-style love stories that end tragically. The lyrics reveal the pain and frustration felt by those who love someone 'beyond their station' and are ruthlessly prevented from being together by social norms. The song is a reminder of the power of love and the lengths people will go to be with the one they love. It is also a heartbreaking representation of the stigma and discrimination faced by many same-sex or interracial couples. The lyrics deliver a powerful message that love should not be defined by social norms, but rather by its innate strength and purity.

I love this. No cynicism, no self-conscious irony, no vulgarity. Simply good singalong stuff with a strong melody and memorable lyrics. Even Nicky Stevens's strange 'crop circle' hairstyle looks the epitome of '70s chic. 👌
@brantlarson421
Just a good old fashioned song about a double suicide.

When my sister was rocking it, we called it a Daffodil hairstyle. Crop circle is hilarious!
