Four Walls
The Browns Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Out where the bright lights are glowing
You're drawn like a moth to a flame
You laugh while the wine's over-flowing
While I sit and whisper your name

Four walls to hear me
Four walls to see
Four walls too hear me
Closing in on me

Sometimes I ask why I'm waiting
But my walls have nothing to say
I'm made for love, not for singing
So here's where you've left me, I'll stay

One night with you is like heaven
And so, while I'm walking the floor
I listen for steps in the hallway
And wait for your knock on my door

Four walls to hear me
Four walls to see

Four walls too hear me
Closing in on me

Overall Meaning

The Browns's song "Four Walls" talks about a person who is in love with someone who takes them for granted. The first few lines of the song say that the person with whom the singer is in love is attracted to the bright lights and laughter, whereas the singer just wants to be with them. Flashes of joy and abundance fill the surroundings, and the singer just sits in one corner, whispering their lover's name. The next verse tells us how the singer is struggling within four walls. They ask why are they waiting for their lover, but they get no answer as the walls are closing in on them. The singer says that they are built for love, not singing, and therefore they are in their present situation.

The bridge of the song is the climax, where the singer compares being with their lover to heaven. They lie awake at night, listening to the footsteps in the hallway, constantly waiting for their lover's knock on the door. The repetition of the phrase "Four walls to hear me, Four walls to see, Four walls too hear me, Closing in on me" shows how the singer has been forced to stay within their four walls and how it is affecting them. The song is about longing, loneliness, and unrequited love. The singer has poured their heart out but is still left with nothing but hope that someday, their love will come back to them.
