I Still Do
The Browns Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And I still do

Darling, many happy years
Have passed away since you and I
We're tiny little boy and girl
Playing neath the summer sky

Do you recall the day
I was bold enough to say
I love you dear, I want you near
And I still do.

Yes, I love the little girl, I do
I was tryin' to say
That I loved you
And I still do.

Darling, let your mem'ry stray
And try to picture you and me
Roaming through the open field
And playing in the hollow tree.

The rocky hills above
I climbed to show my love
For the little girl I loved so well
And I still do.

Yes, I love the little girl, I do
I was tryin' to say
That I loved you
And I still do.

Darling, close your weary eyes
And let me take you by the hand
And straight way lead you through the past
Back to happy childhood land.

And there we'll love again
The same past we did then
Among the flowers we plant as ours
And we still do.

Yes, I love the little girl, I do
I was tryin' to say
That I loved you
And I still do.

And I still do...

Overall Meaning

The Browns’ β€œI Still Do” is a nostalgic tune, where the singer reminisces on the happy memories he shared with his lover when they were children. The opening lines of the song suggest that many years have passed since they played under the summer sky and walked together with their hands entwined. Despite the years that have passed, the singer still loves his partner as much as he did back then. The repetition of β€œAnd I still do” at the end of each verse further emphasizes the singers’ enduring love.

The second verse is a beautiful depiction of the young lovers’ memories. They are pictured wandering through an open field, playing in a hollow tree, and climbing the hills together. The singer expresses his love for his little girl again and emphasizes that he still loves her just as he did all those years ago. The third verse is more heartfelt as the singer asks his partner to close their eyes and take his hand as they revisit the happy memories of their childhood together. They will love one another amidst the same flowers they planted in their younger days. It seems as though the singer is trying to bring back the young love feelings they once had.

The song’s nostalgic sound and the lyrics’ theme effectively lead the listener on a Joyful memory lane, prompting them to revisit their own memories of young love. The song is a beautiful tribute to the enduring love shared between the characters in the song.

It is hard to believe the music and videos available due to modern technology. When I heard The Old Lamplighter at 5 years old on a 45 record that was my older sisters the song left a lasting impression. Beautiful Lyrics and voices. I will be 60 in a couple of weeks and got to see and hear this for the first time since 1960 something.

@JacobsOompa

This was a HUGE HIT for me when it came out...I remember the first day hearing it on radio or tv ......bought the 45rpm record right away.....The BROWNS were the best in sibling harmony...along with Tompall and the Glaser Brothers....the best.
I have this first album too with THE THREE BELLS.....fantastic....

Love The Browns. What Great Recordings they Made.

@countrypaul

What great harmonies, what ghastly early '50s hairstyles! One of the best vocal arrangements by one of my favorite groups ever.
