Wake Up Jonah
The Browns Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dearly beloved
If this love only exists in my dreams
Don't wake me up

Too much light in this window
Don't wake me up
Only coffee, no sugar inside my cup
If I wake and you're here still, give me a kiss
I wasn't finished dreamin' about your lips

Don't wake me up, up, up, up, up, up
Don't wake me up, up, up, up, up, up
Don't wake me up, up, up, up, up, up
Don't wake me up
Don't wake me
Don't wake me up, up
Don't wake me up
Don't wake me up, yeah
Don't wake me up, up, up, up, up, up
Don't wake me up
Don't wake me

So much life in the city, you won't believe
Been awake for some days now, no time to sleep
If your heart is a pillow, this love's the bed
Tell me what is the music inside my head

Don't wake me up, up, up, up, up, up
Don't wake me up, up, up, up, up, up
Don't wake me up, up, up, up, up, up
Don't wake me up
Don't wake me
Don't wake me up, up
Don't wake me up
Don't wake me up, yeah
Don't wake me up, up, up, up, up, up
Don't wake me up
Don't wake me

I don't wanna fall, fall, fall, fall asleep, no
I don't wanna fall unless I'm falling for you
I don't wanna fall, fall, fall, fall asleep, no
I don't wanna fall unless I'm falling for you

Don't wake me up, up
Don't wake me up
Don't wake me up, yeah
Don't wake me up, up, up, up, up, up

Don't wake me up
Don't wake me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Browns' song "Wake Up Jonah" speak about the desire to remain in a dream-like state where love is perfect and everlasting. The song opens with the lines "Dearly beloved, if this love only exists in my dreams, don't wake me up," emphasizing the belief that the love experienced is so extraordinary that it feels unreal, almost like a dream. The singer pleas not to be awakened from this dream-like state, clinging to the hope that the love they are experiencing will continue to exist.

The following lines "Too much light in this window, don't wake me up, only coffee, no sugar inside my cup, if I wake and you're here still, give me a kiss, I wasn't finished dreamin' about your lips" suggest a desire to prolong this dream-like love. The singer wants to savor every moment and continue to experience the blissful emotions that love brings. They long for the continuation of this love story, not wanting to be disrupted by reality.

As the song progresses, the lyrics express the overwhelming sensation of being alive in the city, unable to sleep due to the vibrant energy and the presence of this deep love. The lyrics "been awake for some days now, no time to sleep" highlight the all-consuming nature of this love, causing the singer to be fully present and unable to rest. They compare their heart to a pillow and this love to a bed, signifying that this love provides comfort and a place of solace from the chaotic world around them.

Ultimately, the song expresses the fear of falling asleep and losing this love. The lyrics "I don't wanna fall, fall, fall, fall asleep, no, I don't wanna fall unless I'm falling for you" convey the singer's reluctance to let go of this love and their yearning for it to be reciprocated. They don't want to fall asleep unless it is in the arms of their beloved, emphasizing the depth of their emotions and the desire to remain in this dream-like state.

Overall, "Wake Up Jonah" by The Browns captures the sentiment of wanting to hold onto a perfect love, not wanting to be disturbed by reality, and cherishing every moment of this dream-like experience.

Cora, how right you are, I love those old songs that no one has heard before, this one brings back many memories of our grandma. (Maxine Brown)

When we took a vinal recording of this back home, our grandma Tuberville was at our house. I can still see the smile on her face. No one had record players and when she had to leave, going back to the nursing home, she cried and said "Mac, I must live long enough to hear this song again". She did, many times. I always think of my role model, grandma Tuberville.(Maxine Brown)
