The band seemed to get a degree of support from their record label, Island, for their first two LPs, the hard edged "The Buck Pets," and the more melodic follow up "Mercurotones." The band also had opening spots on tour with larger acts such as Jane's Addiction, but in the end The Buck Pets brand of intelligent, crafted, alternative hard rock was probably a few a years too early to see commercial success. However, the band had a large following in the Dallas/Fort Worth and Norman, Oklahoma area who still miss them.
As a coda, the The Buck Pets released the more restrained, melancholy "To The Quick" -- a fine, almost totally ignored LP -- in 1993 on the independent label Restless.

Surround myself with the things I trust
I don't feel anything except my lust
Jumpin' on the fast train
This is on hold and it feels so great
Never wake up to a brand new day
Keeps the inside, far away
I'll change you and you change me
We can find a place to hide
Once we're there, I won't even care
I just want to be inside
It's so damn bright when the truth is out
Could you tell me just a few more lies?
Feel I can't do it from the sun's first bite
I'm bored to death, so figure just might
Catch your on-call boredom throughout the night
I'm never gonna turn around
I'll change you, and you change me
We can find a place to hide
And once we're there, I won't even care
I just want to get inside
It's so bright when the truth is out
Please tell me just a few more lies
The Buck Pets's song "Iron Cock" explores themes such as trust, lust, and the desire to escape from reality. The opening lines, "Thinkin' each day's gonna beat the rust, Surround myself with the things I trust," suggest the singer's preference for familiarity and routine. However, the third line, "I don't feel anything except my lust, Jumpin' on the fast train," indicates that the singer has a strong sexual desire, possibly overwhelming any other emotions.
The second verse builds on this theme of escapist tendencies, with "Never wake up to a brand new day, Keeps the inside, far away, Think I'd better turn around." The singer seems content to stay in a place of comfort and avoid facing any challenges. The lines "I'll change you and you change me, We can find a place to hide, Once we're there, I won't even care, I just want to be inside," further suggest this desire to escape, but also a desire for physical intimacy.
The chorus repeats the theme of escape, with "We can find a place to hide, And once we're there, I won't even care, I just want to get inside." However, the final lines of the song, "It's so bright when the truth is out, Please tell me just a few more lies," indicate that the singer may not really want to escape completely, but rather seeks the comfort of a comforting illusion.
Overall, "Iron Cock" explores the themes common to rock songs of the 80s, such as anti-establishment sentiment, a desire for individualism, and a focus on emotional intensity. The lyrics suggest an individual who is both fascinated with and repulsed by reality, preferring to hide in a fantasy world of their own making.
