Happy Christmas
The Canadian Brass Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So this is Christmas and what have you done,
Another year over, a new one just begun.

And so this is Christmas, I hope you have fun,
The near and the dear ones, the old and the young.

A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fears.

And so this is Christmas for weak and for strong,
The rich and the poor ones, the road is so long.

And so happy Christmas for black and for white
For the yellow and red ones let's stop all the fights.

A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fear.

And so this is Christmas and what have we done
Another year over, a new one just begun.

And so happy Christmas we hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones, the old and the young.

A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fear.

War is over if you want it, war is over now.

Overall Meaning

The Canadian Brass's song "Happy Christmas" is a message of hope and unity that transcends the holiday season. The lyrics, written by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, encourage listeners to reflect on the passing year and look forward to a new one with anticipation and joy. The opening lines, "So this is Christmas and what have you done, another year over, a new one just begun," are a call to action. Lennon challenges us to consider our accomplishments and shortcomings over the past year, and to use this reflection as a starting point to make positive changes in the year to come.

As the song progresses, Lennon's message becomes increasingly inclusive, as he notes that Christmas is a time for all people, regardless of their background or circumstances. He urges us to find common ground with those around us and to put an end to conflict and division. The line "War is over if you want it, war is over now" is particularly powerful, as it reminds us that peace is not an abstract concept but something that can be attained if we work towards it.

I went to high school with Chuck Daellenbach in Manitowoc WI. and was in the band with him. He was very talented then already. Also took private flute lessons from his father, who was the band teacher at the high school at the time. It was so nice to see Chuck on this video!!
