1) The Cardinals formed in Baltimore in 1946 as the Mellotones by Leon Hardy (bass), Merredith Brothers (tenor), Donald Johnson (baritone) and Ernie Warren (lead). Jack Aydelotte (tenor, guitar) was added and they signed to Atlantic in 1951. Atlantic renamed them the Cardinals to avoid confusion with another Mellotones signed to Columbia. First single ‘Shouldn’t I know?’ was released in May 1951 and reached number 7 on the R’n’B charts. Third single ‘Wheel of fortune’, a cover of a white hit, reached number 6 on the R’n’B charts in 1952. Ernie Warren was drafted and replaced by Leander Tarver, then James Brown (not the famous one), but was back in time for their last hit, ‘The door is still open’, which reached number 4 R’n’B in 1954. The Cardinals released 12 singles for Atlantic and toured throughout this period, finally splitting at the beginning of 1957. Ernie Warren formed a new Cardinals in 1958. Fix It
The Cardinals Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
These years of learning and the hard way by the lessons from the tears
I know it's not a game
But it feels like losing when someone you love throws you away
I'd fix it
I'd fix it
I'd fix it
And I'd always win
I'd always win
So you can always win the in end
How easy was it for you making those plans you made?
Before I became someone for you you know to try to dislocate
Oh, I know it's not a game
But it feels like losing when someone you love throws you away
I'd fix it
I'd fix it
I'd fix it
I'd fix it if I could
And I'd always win
I'd always win
And you would always lose
Look what I did to you
Look what you did to me
Fixed it
I'd fix it, I'd fix it if I could
And I'd always win
And I'd always win
I'd always win in the end
In the song Fix It by The Cardinals, the lyrics reflect on a relationship that has ended despite the effort put into it. The opening lines question why someone would suddenly walk away after everything that has been learned and all of the tears shed. The singer of the song acknowledges that love is not a game and describes the pain of getting "thrown away" by someone they loved. They express their desire to fix the relationship, to always win in the end, and the hurt of realizing that it is not always possible, and they must move on.
The lyrics also touch on the sense of betrayal that comes with a relationship ending. The singer refers to the "plans" their partner had made before they were together, almost as if their partner had used them to achieve their goals before throwing them away. Despite the hurt, the singer still longs to fix the relationship, which is a feeling many can relate to. The lines "Look what I did to you, look what you did to me" suggest that there may have been wrongdoing on both sides and highlight the complexities of relationships.
