Will Ye Go Lassie Go?
The Clancy Brothers And Tommy Makem Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, the summertime is coming
And the trees are sweetly blooming
And the wild mountain thyme
Grows around the blooming heather
Will ye go lassie, go?

And we′ll all go together
To pluck wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
Will ye go lassie, go?

I will build my love a tower
Near yon pure crystal fountain
And on it I will build
All the flowers of the mountain
Will ye go lassie, go?

And we'll all go together
To pluck wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
Will ye go lassie, go?

If my true love she were gone
I would surely find another
Where wild mountain thyme
Grows around the blooming heather
Will ye go lassie, go?

And we′ll all go together
To pluck wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
Will ye go lassie, go?

Oh, the summertime is coming
And the trees are sweetly blooming
And the wild mountain thyme

Grows around the blooming heather
Will ye go lassie, go?

Overall Meaning

The song "Will Ye Go Lassie Go?" is a beautiful Scottish and Irish folk song that praises the warm summer season and the beauty of nature. The first stanza calls to attention the arrival of summer, depicted as a time of sweet trees and blooming heathers surrounded by wild mountain thyme. The male protagonist then asks his love interest if she would go with him to pluck the thyme together. The second stanza emphasizes the singer's love for his lady by constructing a tower made of flowers which will be stationed near a crystal fountain.

In the third stanza, the singer reveals a readiness to move on from their current relationship and find another love interest if necessary. However, he adds that wherever the wild mountain thyme grows, he would return to the memories of his previous love. Finally, the song ends returning to the first stanza, emphasizing the arrival of summertime and the beauty of nature.

Overall, "Will Ye Go Lassie Go?" can be analyzed as a metaphor for the transience of love, the beauty of nature, and the cyclical nature of life, where summertime always returns after the cold winter.

So many hearts your way. I was wishing I could go back to before they all past then I read your comment and the dam just burst. Warm hugs to you, I'm sure he's with the boys enjoying good music and story telling where the Irish red ale is ever flowing. O the summer time has come
And the trees are sweetly bloomin'
And the wild mountain thyme
Grows around the bloomin' heather
Will ye go lassie go?
And we'll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the bloomin' heather
Will ye go lassie go?
I will build my love a bower
By a cool crystal fountain
And around it I will pile
All the wild flowers from the mountain
Will ye go lassie go?
And we'll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the bloomin' heather
Will ye go lassie go?
If my true love should not come
Then I'll surely find another
To pull wild mountain mountain thyme
All around the bloomin' heather
Will ye go lassie go
And we'll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the bloomin' heather
Will ye go lassie go?
And we'll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the bloomin' heather
Will ye go lassie go?

My mother was a Kerry woman, born in 1926, who just passed today 12/1/21 at about 3pm. For the last few years as her health declined, this was one of the few songs that could make her sing and clap her hands. God bless the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. They were the soundtrack of my youth, and long after they had all passed were still making people happy. I thank them for the joy they have brought to my mother, and to me.

I'm happy to hear that, Liam and Tommy, best ever, and the group, the greatest

My grandfather was from Kerry born in 1937. He loved this song. I learned how to play it for him and to see him light up and start singing is a memory I hold close. He passed barely a week before your mom.
