I'm A Cult Hero
The Cure Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm a cult hero
A dream come true
You want to touch me
But you can't get through
I walk on water and I don't get wet
I've got something you won't forget

I'm a cult hero, paid my dues
I'm a cult hero, got nothing to lose
I'm a cult hero

I'm a cult hero (hero)
I'm a cult hero (hero)
I'm a cult hero (hero)

I'm a cult hero
I'm ahead of my time
You'll never rule me
'Cause I'm all mine
Bounce off of me
'Cause I'm so strong
My time is coming and it won't be long

I'm a cult hero, paid my dues
I'm a cult hero, got nothing to lose
I'm a cult hero

(I'm a cult hero)
(I'm a cult hero)
(I'm a cult hero)
(I'm a cult hero)

I'm a cult hero (hero)
I'm a cult hero (hero)
I'm a cult hero (hero)
I'm a cult hero (hero)
I'm a cult hero (hero)
I'm a cult hero (hero)

Save us

I'm a cult hero, baby

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Cure's song "M" talk about a person who considers himself a cult hero. He sees himself as someone who has paid his dues, has nothing to lose, is ahead of his time, and is strong enough to bounce off any obstacles. According to the lyrics, this person is seen as a dream come true and people desire to touch him, but they cannot get through him. He believes he is special because he can walk on water and doesn't get wet, and he has something remarkable that people will never forget. He is confident that his time is coming soon, and he won't be ruled by anyone because he is all his.

The song is a confident declaration of individuality, and the cult hero concept further emphasizes the singer's uniqueness. Robert Smith, The Cure's lead vocalist, has explained that this song is about him being too arrogant and self-centered. He wrote the song for the fictional rock star Spike, a character in a British comic book series called "Laser Eraser and Pressbutton."

Aside from its meaning, the song boasts a catchy chorus section featuring a lively melody that is repeated several times throughout the song. The song is also notable for its use of a Moog synthesizer, which creates an eerie, spacey sound that adds another layer of texture to the song.

Sorry but this is CULT HERO, not The Cure. The single was conceived by Robert Smith & Simon Gallup (then bassist of the Magspies) as a way to test their musical compatibility. Smith was considering Gallup as a prospective replacement for Michael Dempsey (the Cure's bassist at the time). The songs were written for, and feature on vocals, local Horley postman Frank Bell. They also feature Malice/Easy Cure guitarist Porl Thompson and Magspies keyboardist Matthieu Hartley amongst an extended lineup of friends and family, including Robert's sisters Janet and Margaret and local band the Obtainers. Info easily obtained from Ten Imaginary Years (Cure book), Wikipedia, or any huge Cure fan, like myself. Enjoy!

@sdmittelsteadt3700

These songs appear on the reissue of Seventeen Seconds......so basically, YES! It is the Cure!!

@twomindz79

It's released as the cure by Robert so it's the cure for me.

@aaron1888

@SD Mittelsteadt basically no you are wrong its a different band. it was reissued on a cure album because after 40 years the cure made a little more music than cult hero and some members were in both bands. the original 7" has no mention of the cure anywhere

@RaBob

@Aaron Westall This record project instigated by pre-famous Robert Smith when he was in a pub with Simon Gallup (before Simon joined The Cure) is the project that led DIRECTLY to the creation of THE CURE. All the rudimentary elements of The Cure's first album are in this 7-inch record released in 1979 of "FICTION" records (Catalog # FICS 06; . So even though you are correct to say that this is "Cult Hero," and not 'The Cure".... you cannot deny that "Cult Hero" was to "The Cure" as "The Quarrymen" was to "The Beatles." Most of the key members of the future legends in their "pre-fame" infancy. Cult Hero became The Cure, just as The Quarrymen became The Beatles.

@aaron1888

@Ra Bob all of that may be true and if it hapened in 88 im sure they would have released it as the cure but it was released in 79 as cult hero for a simple reason that you pointed out simon was not in the cure. the cure at the time was smith tholhurst and dempsey
