In what became known as the band's classic line-up, the band featured Joe Morello (1928β2011) on drums, Eugene Wright (1923-2020) on bass, and Paul Desmond (1924-1977) on saxophone. The band remains best-known for their use of odd time signatures, and were a premier group in the cool jazz movement. They produced several standards, including Take Five and Blue Rondo Γ la Turk.
Throughout the years, and changing line-ups, the group maintained a strong fan-base among jazz fans of all ages.

Desmondβs solo has almost no 8th lines. The structure is so different than most other saxophonists in jazz. He almost slows down throughout the solo, sustaining even more notes, like heβs riding a wave to shore. The band is listening so intently, they become that wave for him. Itβs goddamn beautiful

"I have won several prizes as the world's slowest alto player, as well as a special award in 1961 for quietness." (Paul Desmond)

Have that "Take Ten" LP where Paul has written those liner notes instead of George Avakian, and it's such fantastic barbed witI still laugh at the part about Jim Hall, the guitarist.@@marcellomentasimonsennico5670

As a drummer I'd like to take a moment to Β recognize the impeccable time of Gene Wright on this tune. He is laying those half notes down like soft, buttery concrete, creating the magic carpet *(with Joe) on which Dave and Paul fly.

I am a student of Joe Morello. Dave was on my radio show. BCDrummer Beautifully, poetically stated here. I really like your word imagery. Gene is the only one who is still alive. Anyway--great comment.

@Joe Caroselli Gene just passed away Dec 30. :(
@joecaroselli5858
@Bruce Peters Yes. Thank you for letting me know. When I wrote that a year ago, Mr. Wright was still very much with us, but as you point out,, he recently passed! In a different kind of a way, Gene was like Joyce Randolph, who is the last surviving member of The Honeymooners! Anyway, thanks for pointing out Gene's passing. He was a magnificent "anchor" of that iconic group.
@cooljazzr
Desmond's solo is so perfect, like a whole new song, the true master of melody.
