The Queen's Approach
The Decemberists Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm
Made of bones of the branches
The boughs and the brow-beating light

While my feet are the trunks
And my head is the canopy high

And my fingers extend
To the leaves
And the eaves
And the (bright?)

Might I shine?
It's my shine (child?)

He
Was a baby abandoned
Entombed in a cradle of claim (clay?)

And I was a soul
Who took pity
And stole him away

And gave him the form of
A fawn to inhabit
By day

Bright Eyes, stay
It's my day

And you
Have removed this temptation
That's troubled my innocent child

To abduct and abuse and to render, (bereft?) and defiled

But the river is deep
To the banks and the water is wild,

I will fly you
To the far side

Overall Meaning

The Queen's Approach by The Decemberists begins with the description of the queen, who is made of the bones of branches, boughs, and brow-beating light. This imagery gives the listener a sense of how the queen is rooted in the earth and is a symbol of strength and vitality. She is like a tree that has grown tall and is now extending her branches to the leaves, eaves, and brightness of the world. The queen is asking if she can radiate her own uniqueness and magic into the world, and if that magic can shine onto others.

The second verse introduces a baby who was abandoned and entombed in a cradle of clay. The queen, who is empathetic towards the baby, stole him and gave him the form of a fawn to inhabit during the day. The fawn is a metaphor for innocence, as it is a baby animal that needs to be protected. The queen is asking the fawn to stay with her and enjoy the magic of the day.

The final verse describes how the queen is glad that the fawn is with her as it has removed the temptation of someone abducting him and abusing him. However, the river is deep, and the water on the banks is wild, so the queen will fly the fawn to the other side where he will be safe.
