Yes, Jimmy Lauer was the lead singer. I grew up with Jimmy way back when in Deerfield. I also went to see them play as much as I could - and the place you are talking about was called the Pink Panther. I still have my ID card. I went almost every weekend.

I was there too. They definitely were the best band in Chicago. I saw the Shadows of Night, the New Colony Six and the Buckinghams. All were great bands but the Del-vets were so talented.

I went to the Panther many times ! I was classmates at Highland Park High with Jack Burchell and Bob Good. I would often see Jack at school and request that they play a song for me which they always did.Great guys,great band

Our band used to play Last Time Around as our last song at live gigs (1968-69) and we used to go nuts jamming out on it. All 5 instruments would just go all out at the very end. We'd give it everything we had to the point where one of our friends who saw us play Last Time Around commented that he was disappointed that we didn't destroy any of our equipment because that would have been a fitting climax to our frenzied wind out to Last Time Around. But we sure did have fun playing this song!

I had the “Pride and Joy” of knowing Jack Burchall the remarkable bass player and gifted musician. He was about 12 years older than me. I met him when I was about 15 in 1975. I was a budding guitarist and Jack was a hero to me. Later in life I had the pleasure of playing in a surf band with Jack who switched to guitar. We had a great little band and I will never forget the great times we had playing music or talking on the phone for hours to keep him company on his road trips. If I wasn’t home he would talk to my wife, Lynn. He taught me so much about what makes a good band. He passed several days after one of our gigs. We were devastated.

We love you Uncle Jack.

You left an enviable legacy my friend! Peace and love from Mark and Lynn.

P.S. I think Lynn misses you more than me sometimes!

These guys were the best around. Played every song as good as, or better than the original version. In the "Battle of the Bands" they played against the Shadows of Knight at Loyola University-they both played Gloria (Them-written by Van Morrison) and the Del-Vetts put the Shadows to shame...played it better as judged by the crowd. Last I heard they changed their name to The Pride and Joy and went out to San Francisco and obscurity. Anyone else confirm or deny?

A little bit of trivia : Roger (the drummer) hanging over the side of the vette was the proud owner of this classic. Sandy (the girl seen walking off the jacket cover) was the girlfriend to lead guitarist and singer, Jimmy, seen second in right next to Roger.

I played drums with metal drumstick (with a nylon tip) this drummer threw out into the crowd and my sister caught, probably at the Rolling Stone.

Or it was some other band and drummer there.

Love the song, a bit before it's time, nice that they were local for us.

Ah! These guys were around the Chicago suburbs in the 60's. I think my sister brought me a nylon-tipped drum stick their drummer threw out during a concert (I was learning drums at the time), in Glenview or wherever. I lived in Winnetka.

I remember this! Lived around there, then. Had a metal-bodied drumstick from their drummer once -- he threw it into the audience, and my sister caught it, nylon tip. Lobed that drumstick. Used it in my right hand!

Thanks for your help, I totally appreciate it! As a matter of fact, I had gone to our main public library here in what used to be the capital of Flower Power, San Francisco and being the opened minded fun loving being that I have always been picked up on Nuggets 1965-1969 (or some time like that) psychedelic rock and found a whole lot of bands I've never heard of, The Lyrics being one of them. I'm really into verses.

There was a club called "The Rolling Stone" in Winnetka that was a hub (along with "The Cellar" in Arlington Heights) that was the hub for music of that era. If you lived in Winnetka, she probably got it at The Stone. The Del-Vetts used to play there often.

Surely a great tune! But it doesn't strike me some much as a punk song, not even the proto-punk, as they know way too well how to play their instruments to be punk :P Well, actually it's that they have a professional approach to the music and that's certainly not something punk aspired to. I'd say they dabbled somewhat in heavy rock, the sound is truly menacing, not unlike Black Sabbath's. Though this song has no obscure ocultism in it and so wins on impact scale alot more for me :)
