Newhaven-Dieppe
The Devils Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everyone else has gone
But we remain a little longer
I know that i'm losing you & losing will never do
Do what you did for me our transparent history soon will fall apart
We're back at the start & we can't help it
You know why you're running Newhaven - Dieppe
You know that I'll always be on your step
But do you know why you're lonely tonight

Tonight
Tonight

Everyone else has gone
But we remain a little longer
Between the paperbacks sleep the insomniacs
On sheets of black again
With only yourself to blame
For loss of self control & how youre looking old & no wonder
You know why you're running Newhaven - Dieppe
You know that I'll always be on your step
But do you know why you're lonely tonight

Overall Meaning

The Devil's song "Newhaven-Dieppe" is a melancholic tune about the end of a relationship. The opening line "Everyone else has gone, but we remain a little longer" sets the scene of a couple who is holding onto the last strains of their relationship. The next line "I know that I'm losing you, and losing will never do" is the singer's acknowledgement that their relationship is at its end. However, despite his realization, he pleads for his partner to "Do what you did for me" as he fears that their "transparent history soon will fall apart." The couple is "back at the start" of their relationship, but it seems like they can't help it, as they are still "losing" and "lonely tonight."

As the song progresses, the lyrics turn darker. The singer reveals that "Between the paperbacks sleep the insomniacs on sheets of black again," which could symbolize that he is alone in his bed, unable to sleep, and is faced with the reality that his partner is no longer with him. He then blames himself for the "loss of self-control" and the fact that he is "looking old" despite his youth, which seems to indicate that he has been grappling with the end of the relationship for a long time. The song ends on an eerie note with the repetition of "Tonight" as if to drive the point home that this is truly the end of the road for the couple.
