The Changeling
The Doors Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Uh!
Uh-ah!
Ged-ow!

I live uptown
I live downtown
I live all around
I had money, and I had none
I had money, and I had none
But I never been so broke that I couldn't leave town

I'm a changeling
See me change
I'm a changeling
See me change

I'm the air you breathe
Food you eat
Friends you greet in the sullen street, wow

See me change
See me change

Get loose!

I live uptown
I live downtown
I live all around

I had money, yeah, and I had none
I had money, yeah, and I had none
But I never been so broke that I couldn't leave town

Well, I'm the air you breathe
Food you eat
Friends you greet in the sullen street, wow

Ooh, ma!
Uh, ah!

You gotta see me change
See me change
Yeah, I'm leavin' town
On a midnight train
Gotta see me change
Change, change, change
Change, change, change
Change, change, change

Change, change, change
Whoa, change, change, change

Overall Meaning

The Doors' song "The Changeling" is a reflection on life, money, and identity. The lyrics express the idea that one's financial situation is not the defining factor of their life, and that they are capable of changing and evolving into something else. The repetition of "I'm a changeling, see me change" emphasizes the idea of personal transformation and the ability to reinvent oneself.

The first stanza of the song sets the scene of the different neighborhoods the singer has lived in and their financial status. However, the second stanza makes it clear that money doesn't restrict them from leaving town, suggesting that they have the freedom to pursue their dreams and explore new opportunities.

The chorus, which repeats twice throughout the song, underscores the transformative idea of the song. The singer declares themselves to be the air you breathe, food you eat, and friends you greet, signifying their impact on the world around them. The outro, which includes several repetitions of "change," emphasizes the idea of constant evolution and progress.

A changeling is a mythological creature who is substituted for a human being. They’re often unpredictable, which is how Jim Morrison frames himself in this composition of his.

He penned the lyrics in 1968, but The Doors didn’t record the rocker until 1970, when they made what would be Morrison’s last album with the group, “LA Woman.”

Commenting on “The Changeling” in 2012, keyboardist Ray Manzarek observed that the tune tells the story of Morrison’s adventurous life in LA, whereas drummer John Densmore said that from the time they met to the time of his demise, Morrison changed from “Michelangelo’s statue of David” to “overweight with a beard.”

In 2011, The Doors YouTube channel released an official video for this song. 💚🎵💙

You have not been forgotten, forever 27 James Douglas Morrison (1943 - 1971)… 🌹
