For a year I played along
On a whim I caught a glimpse of
Where I think you fought and lost
To the tee I followed blindly
Through the good times and the bad
I can still trace all the paths there
But I can never go back
To the place you've known so long
Give a shit for all the cancers
Let the light shine out the dawn
People say they know the story
I have heard it's short and sweet
Pay no mind to all your worries
I let go and let repeat
The lyrics of The Elders' song "Between Far and Away" touch upon themes of nostalgia, acceptance, and letting go of the past. The singer reflects on a past time when they were able to see someone they cared about laughing and enjoying life. This experience lasted for a year, during which the singer played along and perhaps pretended to be okay with the situation, without fully understanding or acknowledging the underlying struggles that were present.
The lyrics mention a moment of realization or insight ("On a whim I caught a glimpse of where I think you fought and lost"), suggesting that the singer may have belatedly recognized the challenges or battles that the other person was facing, possibly leading to their eventual defeat or downfall. Despite following this person blindly through both joyful and difficult times, the singer acknowledges that they can now see the paths they have walked together but cannot return to the past.
There is a sense of seeking closure or resolution as the singer implores the recipient of the blessings to revisit the familiar location where they have been for so long. The mention of "giving a shit for all the cancers" could symbolize a desire to confront and confront the negative or toxic aspects of the past, allowing the light of new beginnings and possibilities to emerge. The mention of letting go of worries and allowing things to repeat suggests a willingness to surrender control or expectations, allowing life to unfold naturally and without resistance.
Overall, the lyrics of "Between Far and Away" convey a mix of introspection, acceptance, and a willingness to release the burdens of the past. The singer grapples with memories of sharing both happy and challenging moments with someone, while also recognizing the limitations of returning to those moments. Ultimately, there is a sense of surrendering to the flow of life, trusting in the process of letting go, and finding peace in the uncertainty of what lies ahead.
