Stylisticly, The Feeling have a debt of gratitude to the 70s, particularly bands such as 10cc, Supertramp, Pilot, Buggles, Queen, Stackridge, and other "progressive pop" acts. They are not averse to wearing their heart on their sleeve at gigs, playing covers of tunes by their favourite artists (such as 'Video Killed The Radio Star' by Buggles).
The Feeling have also followed the 'progressive' tradition of the concept album, with Twelve Stops and Home being a concept album about lost and unrequited love. The album starts with a relationship having just broken up, then follows through with the various emotions of the protagonist from hopeless dreamer to turning to drink for comfort, and finally slumping home.
Back Where I Came From
The Feeling Lyrics

I'ma go back, back where I came from,
Back where I came from, that's where my heart lies now, now.
I'ma go home, back where I started,
Back where I started, home's where me heart is now, now.
I'm coming to you, cause you are the only one,
Throwing stones, sticks and stones
Will break them bones, will break them bones (stones)
But these words are all I have, I have to throw (stones)
And I'm throwin' em hard, I'm throwin' em hard.
Listen to me, I sound like an old man now,
Only the unregretful of us stay young, young.
And I've got a thousand things that I wish I hadn't done.
Like throwing stones, sticks and stones
Will break them bones, will break them bones (stones)
But these words are all I have, I have to throw (stones)
And I'm throwin' em hard, I'm throwin' em hard.
They're only words, they won't hurt nobody.
Say them anyway.
Stones, stones, stones
They're only words, they won't hurt nobody.
Say them anyway.
Stones, sticks and stones
Will break them bones, will break them bones (stones)
But these words are all I have, I have to throw (stones)
And I'm throwin' em hard, I'm throwin' em hard.
They're only words, they won't hurt nobody.
The Feeling's song, Back Where I Came From, is about the realization of one's roots, where one has come from and where the heart truly lies now. The lyrics convey a sense of longing to return back home and to the person who believed in them when no one else did. The song starts with the chorus, where the singer expresses his intention to go back where he came from, where his heart lies now. The second part of the chorus emphasizes that home is where his heart is, and he wants to go back where he started.
In the second verse of the song, the singer reflects on his past mistakes, expressing regret for the things he has done. He admits he has made many mistakes and that he wishes he hadn't done them. He likens himself to an 'old man,' someone who has lived a long life and learned from it. The line 'Only the unregretful of us stay young' implies that the singer believes that regrets and the weight of one's mistakes can make a person feel old and tired.
The bridge of the song is a repeated line, 'Throwing stones, sticks and stones will break them bones.' The metaphor of throwing stones refers to the power of words and how they can hurt someone just like physical abuse. The last part of the song takes a positive note and emphasizes that words, even though they can be stones, don't have the power to hurt anybody. Despite that, the singer encourages people to say what they need to say, to throw their stones.
