You're So Vain
The Feeling Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You walked into the party
Like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf, it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror
As you watched yourself cavort
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner
They'd be your partner

And you're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I bet you think this song is about you
Don't you?
Don't you?

You had me several years ago
When I was still quite naïve
You said we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved
One of them was me
I had a dream, there was clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee

And you're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I bet you think this song is about you
Don't you?
Don't you?

Oh, you're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I bet you think this song is about you
Don't you?
Don't you?
Oh

You're where you should be all the time
And when you're not, you're with
Some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend
Clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee

And you're so vain
I bet you think this song is about you
You're so vain
I bet you think this song is about you
Don't you?
Don't you?

Oh, you're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I bet you think this song is about you
Don't you?
Don't you?
Don't you?
Don't you?
Don't you?
Don't you?
Don't you?
Don't you?
Don't you?
Yeah

Don't you?

Overall Meaning

The Feeling's song You're So Vain is a catchy and sassy tune that tells a story about a man who is extremely vain and thinks that everything is about him. The song begins with a vivid description of the man's entrance into a party, where he strutted in like he owned the place. He wore a hat that dipped below one eye and an apricot scarf that added to his overall charisma. As he gazed into the mirror, he appeared to be quite pleased with himself and the attention he was receiving from the female party guests. They all wished to be his partner, which only boosted his ego even more.

The lyrics then shift to a past relationship that the singer had with this man. She expresses that she was quite young and naive when they were together several years prior. He convinced her that they were a great match and that he would never leave her. However, as time went on, he began to give up things that he once loved, including her. The last line of the verse is a clever and poetic metaphor in which she expresses her disappointment by saying, "I had a dream, there were clouds in my coffee." The song then returns to the chorus where the singer repeatedly calls out the man for his vanity and how he thinks everything is about him.

The overall theme of the song is to call out someone for their self-centered arrogance. It's both humorous and relatable as most people, at one point or another, have encountered someone who thinks the world revolves around them. The Feeling's You're So Vain perfectly captures the essence of such people and how irritating they can be.

Line by Line Meaning

You walked into the party Like you were walking onto a yacht Your hat strategically dipped below one eye Your scarf, it was apricot
You entered the party with an air of superiority and confidence. Your hat was positioned in a specific way to exude a certain coolness, and your apricot scarf added to your trendy look.

You had one eye in the mirror As you watched yourself cavort And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner They'd be your partner
You were so self-absorbed that you couldn't resist looking at yourself in the mirror, even as you mingled with others. The girls present were mesmerized by you and longed to be with you.

And you're so vain You probably think this song is about you You're so vain I bet you think this song is about you Don't you? Don't you?
You are so egotistical that you assume this song is centered around you. It doesn't surprise me that you believe the lyrics were written as a tribute to your greatness.

You had me several years ago When I was still quite naïve You said we made such a pretty pair And that you would never leave But you gave away the things you loved One of them was me I had a dream, there was clouds in my coffee Clouds in my coffee
You used to have control over me when I was younger and more inexperienced. You praised our relationship but eventually threw away my love for something else. I had a premonition involving clouds in my cup of coffee, which I now realize supports my belief that you are not to be trusted.

You're where you should be all the time And when you're not, you're with Some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend Wife of a close friend Clouds in my coffee Clouds in my coffee
You seem to be in the right places at the right time, but when you're not around, I suspect you're mingling with people you shouldn't be. Perhaps with suspicious characters or the spouses of people you know well. This recurring theme of clouds in my coffee reinforces my unease about you and my dreams warning me about your character.

Oh, you're so vain You probably think this song is about you You're so vain I bet you think this song is about you Don't you? Don't you? Oh
I can't help but reiterate how exceedingly conceited you are. You must assume that this song is all about you, and it's a testament to your ego that you're convinced of this fact. I can't help but ask, don't you think it's a bit over the top?

Don't you? Don't you? Don't you? Don't you? Don't you? Don't you? Don't you? Don't you? Don't you? Yeah Don't you?
Don't you see how self-absorbed you are? I've made that point repeatedly throughout the song, and it should be crystal clear to you at this point. So, don't you agree that you need to take a step back and gain some perspective? Don't you?
