As has already been written, this is still probably the best opening to a film I've seen, nearly 2020, I'll be 44 years young on New Years Day, I was too young to see this at the cinema, so I got the soundtrack on cassette as a kid before I'd seen the movie, I used to sit listening to it, just trying to imagine what would be happening in the film to each song.
I remember my Mum asking a family what the 15 rating was for, he explained that there was a Freench kissing scene in it and that was about it.
That all cleared up, as soon as it came into The Loft Video rental store, we headed to get it.
I can't really remember watching it first time round, I just know I did, however what's really interesting to me and my own personal love of this film, is that over the years I've watched it again and again, just recently with my teenage son, is that this opening scene just seems to get better and better every time I view it.
The Top Gun Anthem in it's edited version here is just so fitting with what's happening on deck of that ship.
Harold Faltermeyer gave us movie fans some absolute perfect music scores back in the 80's, Beverley Hills Cop and The Running Man just to name a couple.
This though here and then obviously the Soundtrack version right at the end of the album, is just one of the best songs to feature in a big 80's blockbuster film.
My cassette eventually just gave up after all the times I repeatedly played that song in my bedroom, with of course my Air Guitar with which I took centre stage to play along to.

This has been and always will be my all time favorite movie opening! The radio chatter, the flight deck crew doing their thing, the sounds of the jet engines amping up all leading up to that final salute and the steam catapult launching the tomcat into the sunrise - controlled chaos at its best! Being a military brat, I might be biased ^-^

My oldest son CPO Keith Bemis, died in the line of duty in 2012. This was his favorite movie and probably the reason he joined up. Keith was on the flight crew, he had a leather jacket, rode a motorcycle, and lived in Cali just like Maverick. When I watch this I can see his life and it comforts me.

They nailed the remake. Like absolutely nailed it. I can’t describe the feeling I had after it ended. It was very very similar to the one I had after watching Le Mans 66 with Christian Bale and Matt Damon, like the feeling that you have after walking out the cinema knowing youve watched a very very good fucking film, that you know at any time you’d watch it again and still be completely in love with it.

This opening is so iconic, and the music is so perfect - you can tell that it's Top Gun before that first beat drops. There's an actual sound just before the drum, almost like the breath a singer takes before the opening note. You need nothing more to know what world you're in. Brilliant.

35 years later and this iconic scene still holds up magnificently, just unreal & amazing! Certainly it was ahead of its time by several years.
And the music just draws you right in, that low steady beat that promises much & eventually delivers as it reaches that exciting & unforgettable crescendo! Everything about this scene screams perfection.
Words cannot describe how powerfully & euphorically mesmerized I was upon watching this gloriously upbeat scene for the first time as an 11 year old back in the early Fall of 1986, totally blown away & wondrously riveted as I was! Had never seen anything like it.
For all the various elements work together harmoniously & fall into place seamlessly, the music, sound of the jets firing up, the lighting & its overall, dream like effect, along with the sublime cinematography, all of it just marvelously knitted together, with the end result being this beautifully surreal, fantastically rendered, trance inducing masterpiece, one that still holds up today!

When I was a kid, the F-14 was THE fighter aircraft of the 80s. My dad was in the USAF, we were stationed at AFBs with F-15s and F-4s...but nothing could compare to the outright aggressive and fearsome look of the F-14 Tomcat. Top Gun immortalized this great airplane for an entire generation of aviation enthusiasts worldwide :)

My dad was an aircraft technician for the French Army. I was born the year Top Gun got released. I got pictures of me as a 4yo kid wearing a pilots helmet way too big for my little head while watching Top Gun and pretending to be Maverick. I grew up with sounds of aircraft motors, smell of kerosene and a neverending love for aviation, for human beings who are able to push the limits to the extreme, for great pioneers who are ready to sacrifice themselves to go beyond.
Fast forward to 2022, seeing Top Gun Maverick as a grown up 37 years old had me crushed into tears in a matter of seconds.

Anyone watching films in the 80s knows this intro, a film dedicated to showing how revered US fighter pilots are amongst their countrymen. Lots of perfect storms in the making of the film, the subject, the cast, the score, all these things contributed to making it one of the most iconic films of the 80s era and to this current day. I served in the Navy when this movie was being made. Some of our pilots and aircrew were actually in some of the scenes. I met a few of the actors during this time. They used some of our hangar spaces in the making of it.

Better argument will be The Rock who can opens movies by virtue of his own name, Will Smith`s run from mid 2000 to 2010s and Leo di caprio who has been consistent, but also because he has always work with big directors.
So yeah, TC is the biggest. He opens movie with his name alone, with less known directors and cast members.
U sir sound like u dont watch movies or follows entertainment outside of marvel/dc.

As an aircraft mechanic of 8 years now. This scene always gets me, I obviously haven’t worked on a carrier but it still holds the same value of seeing that aircraft you work on when there’s a red ball and you fixing that problem let’s that jet take off and complete its mission

yesterday i watched in the Top Gun Maverick Movie in the cinema. As the opening scene began- tears were running down my face and i got goosebumps. It was so nostalgic. I watched the movie like 200 times as a kid. My wife looked a bit confused. But i'm sure you guys can understand

I was 16 when I first saw Top Gun in 1986, since then TG was like the theme of my life, i listened to the soundtrack on the weekends with family, dance the music in parties with friends, played TG nintendo game all night, listened to TG anthem for inspiration when im depressed and feeling down. Today I am 52. We watched TG maverick yesterday here in The woodlands, Texas with my wife and 3 kids. When the movie intro played, my 27 yr old said “pops its the same intro!” and DAMN.. the experience was so unreal.. like I time traveled 36 yrs back! it was pure pure nostalgia, goosebumps all over, i felt like 16 again! the movie brought a childs awe and smile on my face and i was teary eyed at the end.. TG maverick exceeded my expectations! Its as good as the first TG, I will watch again! so anyway.. after watchin the movie on my way home i was slamming my nissan armadas gas pedal like flying an F16 tomcat 😄Thank you so much! its just priceless 😍

Jeff Burnham: you would have been on The Forrestal when she came into my home port of Portsmouth in 1986 (I think). I managed to get a boat trip out to her as a DOD UK equivalent, she was anchored in a cold and windy Solent. We stepped from a pitching 50’ launch onto a rock solid stern platform, that stability was so impressive.

Our guide was a snappily dressed airman about my age (mid to late 20’s I guess). He took us around the flight deck and said in a very cool accent “that’s my plane”. Some 34 years later I still remember my trip to the Forrestal.

Did it change my life and I became that fighter pilot we all love from the film. Nope, but I did learn to fly (and crash) hang gliders in the early 90’s. In my book that counts as a near miss 🤓👍🏻👍🏻

@AJW Actually, he’s standing far behind the arresting wires at the aft end of the flight deck. His job is to ensure that the flight deck is clear and warn the LSOs if there is someone or something in the landing area. When I was like 6 years old and walking home from school I remember I always tried to impress this one girl I was walking home with by doing the moves they do in the intro. Those guys were as cool as Maverick and Iceman to me.

Sadly the girl had not the slightest clue what even an aircraft carrier was and so my totally sick aircraft guiding moves did not impress her much.

@AJW My understanding was the filming crew were on the deck filming their actual routine prepping the planes and take off/landings. They even paid a ton of money to turn the entire ship so that the sun was in a certain spot that would be better for filming. They just sat and recorded the real deal, not actors.

I’ve always had a fascination with naval aviation. The planes that the Navy has are just marvels of engineering! I’ve wanted to become a fighter pilot for the longest time now and seeing how my senior year of high school is upon me, ngl, I get a little giddy! This scene alone had created a new generation of pilots when it was released, and it’s incredible to see that it’s still doing so to this day! I hope I’ll be able to see my dream come true in a few years.

Saw "Maverick" 2 weeks ago. I felt like a 13 year old boy who has JUST seen top gun and wants to be a NAVY Aviator all over again. I was pumped with adrenaline and flooded with feel good memories of a golden age. So good I had to watch it AGAIN in the cinema the week after. There are all the homages you can possibly want, and more, but it stands on its own legs (or wings!) perfectly well, and you can see Tom Cruise considers this his baby and poured every bit of energy he has into it.

There's no better intro in an air war/action movie than a scene of a US aircraft carrier launching F-14 Tomcats in the air at dawn. This intro or opening scenes has become iconic for air war movies.

One of my favorite things about this intro was that you would have seen my father several times if it were filmed on his carrier back in 1985. He would have been one of the green shirts up at the forward catapults.

And yes, Top Gun Maverick opens like this, except replacing Tomcats with Hornets and F-35s.

It must have helped with my dad he always had nice pioneer or alpine and bose speakers .... I would crank it up in middle school and high school in the summer .... pretty much have a block party everyday .... it's almost 4pm time to turn the speakers off .... dad will be home soon !

I used to own a laserdisc, so I don't know how many times I've seen this opening. All the timing is in my head. And I never get tired of seeing it. I think Tony Scott is a genius. Top Gun: Maverick was also a homage and it was great, but when you compare it, it still can't exceed the original. As for the opening, I could have made it more similar.

My mum always thought the plot was hackneyed, the acting was one dimensional, the love story was a flop, but the planes...she said the planes were absolutely the best thing about this movie. She’s 💯 right. The Tomcat is a plane that has always captivated my imagination.

The intro of this film gets me everytime. I can only imagine the pure adrenaline rush one may get from witnessing an F-14 tomcat entering and taking off from the flight deck. The view of endless ocean at sunset. The SOUND of a jet engine generating enormous thrust. Even the guy at 3:22 doing that leg shimmy once the cables have hooked. You can tell he loves his job! There can't be anything else in the world as exciting as this. I'd give up everything to do stuff like this for a living and be enthusiastic about what I do, being a part of something great.

A legendary opening scene I remember seeing this when I was 16 years old I rode my bike to the theater. And as a side note my dad was in the Navy he was on the destroyer USS Buchanan in the early 60’s.

What went through my mind during the opening scene was how Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and other deceased members of the Woodstock crowd would be turning over in their graves at the sights and sounds of those fighter planes taking off to the tune of Rock Music

I saw Top Gun Maverick four times last month and this month, twice in IMAX and twice in 4DX. This scene from the opening was recreated in Maverick, but in a modern way. I cried because I missed it so much. Both movies are so great.

Big turbofan engines and ground pounding power. Even for 1986. A friend is a retired Eagle Driver and he says he wished he had a spin with a Tomcat. Big words from an F-15 pilot. He flies triple 7s now.

Brilliant music as well. What's funny about this movie is that I was almost convinced that Adrian Lynne directed half of it, because so much of it feels and looks like one of his flicks. Like one of Lynne's movies with a good measure of locker room humor and action thrown in.

Just saw Top Gun Maverick and this movie was fantastic. It included the nostalgia of the original but made an entirely different feel at the same time. I don't like all the CGI these days, and this movie 'felt' like there was none. I need to know how they did it because it looked like these actors were really flying. It's a must see for the theater as the sounds of the jets were absolutely thrilling. Goosebumps. Tom may be an odd duck (he might even think he's a duck for all I know) but man - he can make fantastic movies. I can't say enough. Go see it. I'm serious - like NOW. Are you still reading this? GO SEE IT!
