Read Between The Lines
The Fixx Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're not the first to be lonely
Thank God you're not the only
Relax with the fact you're surrounded
Follow your bloodline
We feel warm when we think we're protected
Cry out when we feel rejected
Maybe in some other life we're connected
We've seen it all before

Please take heart, find your soul
Read between the lines
Please take heart, play your role
Read between the lines

Please believe I implore you
Spirit flight will restore you
Only love can ignore you
Another fighting heart

Please take heart, find your soul
Read between the lines
Please take heart, play your role
Read between the lines
Please take heart
Read between the lines
Please take heart

Feel warm if you think that you know me
I thank God when you show me
Happy that we're just surviving
Please take heart, we'll survive

Please take heart, find your soul
Read between the lines
Please take heart, play your role
Read between the lines
Please take heart
Read between the lines
Please take heart

You're not the first to be lonely
Between the lines

Thank God you ain't the only
Between the lines

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Read Between The Lines" by The Fixx is a song with a message of hope and encouragement. The opening lines, "You're not the first to be lonely / Thank God you're not the only" acknowledges the common feeling of loneliness and reassures that it is not an uncommon emotion. The song then suggests that we can find comfort in the fact that we are surrounded by people from our own bloodline.

The next lines, "We feel warm when we think we're protected / Cry out when we feel rejected / Maybe in some other life we're connected" highlights the different emotions that we experience as human beings. We feel secure and protected in the company of people we love and care for, but feel distressed when we are rejected by them. The last line suggests that there is a possibility that in some other life, we might have been connected to these people.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the need to read between the lines, find our soul, play our role, and take heart. It encourages us to look beyond the surface and find deeper meanings and connections in our lives. The song concludes with the reminder that we are not alone in our loneliness, and that we can find happiness and survival in being surrounded by others.

I thought that the song Read Between the Lines was written just for me, was speaking to me. And I did... I took heart realizing that someone else was feeling the same as me and was singing about it!!!! This song got me thru some hard times.

The whole Walkabout album is so spiritual. It's all about being connected to something bigger than ourselves, from "Secret Separation " to this song, to "Camphor" to "Peace on Earth." I was 17 when it came out and the Fixx were an important influence in my life, and in my own spirituality .

Tours Puebla Viajes

GREAT SONG!!... I listen to this record since 1988, when we exchanged cassette recordings amongst our friends. The LP was released in Brazil at the time, but it went out of catalog soon afterwards. The CD was also very rare to find. Thank God for these Youtube years!... and thanks for posting this!
